I'm really enjoying learning to paint signs instead of relying on the computer cutter all the time;) so wondered how one paints Lexan or clear acrylic? Is there a way to paint it so its translucent?

Proper way to paint lexan faces is in reverse on clear, ground color is last to be done.
All colors are sprayed carefully using Grip Flex paints made for this process. There is a learning curve so as to spray evenly and not get a blotchy or mottled effect.
Amazing results can be achieved using this process. Your design talents are your only limit. Proper planning is a pre-requisite.
Masks can be made on the plotter of paint mask in reverse.
When sign is internally lighted every letter should be translucent.

It's best to do reverse painting on a light table (or old sign box). I always found it was best to "sneak up" on the color, applying numerous thin coats in multiple directions. Also I was a big fan of "clear" additive, which makes the paint more translucent. But I'll admit, I haven't painted a face in years, preferring translucent graphics on white or a full digital print.
