Can someone tell me how to do this. I imported some simple text from MS Word into Corel X3. Now when I click on it, it opens MS Word in a window and I can edit the text, but I cannot convert to curves so I can cut it on my plotter.

Export it as an AI or eps file and check the box that says convert text to curves. Should work, at least it does in corel 9!!
