100% better. Now stick an ampersand in the center and it looks done to me.

There's a hole in the middle of your name. Move Miles a little closer to Cullinane. The shade could even touch the C without a problem.
Also, I would change the color of the lettering in the outer circle to be less contrast with the background so that it would look more layered. The extreme outer outline could also be lightened in contrast so that it doesn't pop as much as it does now. Then you have a layered look going from high contrast to low contrast.
For some reason I keep seeing everything in layers.
Quite a difference from what you began with.

I'm about the last person here qualified to give design advice, but the outside copy seems too wordy to me and the ampersand suggests "Miles & Cullinane", instead of "Signs & Signwriting". There's also so many concentric circles that it's beginning to look like a bullseye. Try dropping the outside border and layer and let the tag line lettering float outside the circle.
I'd draw it up, but I actually have a paid gig to work on tonight......

Sonny summed things up pretty well. It's just too hard to read with so many elements competing for attention. I would try a simpler approach:
For some reason all my script fonts aren't loading, so I used what I could find. It's just a concept. Flame away.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

Russ you even managed to make Brush Script look great. Simpler, in my opinion, is always better. The message is conveyed instantly in a very clean way. Posts: 8834 | From: Butler, PA, USA | Registered: Jan 2001

While the designs I have seen here are all nice,..I don't see any of them as being effective as a marketing tool for your efforts. I would emphasize the "custom signs and signwriting" and use less emphasis on your name. In my opinion it will be more effective to market your services than trying to associate a service subordinate to your name visually.Isn't that what logo's are intended to do, market your business? I personally think it would mentally impact your audience and associate your name with your services more effectively that way,....I think if you should swap your name with the two services listed as the primary copy in the design,...but that is just my opinion and we all know about opinions,... everyone has one,....

I figured I'd give it a shot. I was kind of playing off of the idea you had with the ribbon. I know I left out a lot of text, but I just had a few ideas I thought I would share.
Edit to add: the brushes are from Butler Gold!

Joe, that design is visually stimulating and your effects on the surname are outstanding. The brushes are awesome... I might have to creatively re-adapt that myself sometime...
I think that the copy looks disjointed and has no flow or connection. To me, it reads "Miles Sign Writing". Putting these words in the same circle gives it a connection and it doesn't follow a natural flow. "Custom" is just floating and connected to nothing. I also think that making "Since 1975" a dark shade of the background panel would send this copy more into the background with the emphasis it needs.
Your take on eliminating some of the extra copy is good. If a design is too wordy, it becomes excessive and irritating... too much for the eye to take in.
Still, very nice work. The execution is outstanding. I like your use of color.

Joe, that's very nice. I'm always impressed with your work. Bruce's comments about the copy are accurate, but overall it has a very nice look... although I do keep staring at the Exacto knives in the 'Cullinane'...

I also agree, a little rearranging of the text and it's a killer Maybe Custom where Miles is now and Miles above the u between the C and l? in script?

This is the first chance I've had to see this post since I commented on it - I haven't had a chance to mess with this, but not sure I have to. You are getting some great input here.

Good work Joe, but I still think it needs a labyrinth in there somewhere - I see you began one at the top, you just need to finish it
Actually miles of labyrinths...
Miles of Cork Labyrinths, in 3-D...
(ok I'm going now!)

Joe, thanks for the effort but I am still hanging on for the style that Glenn pointed me in. here is where I am up to till today.

But then Ian with all his name changes caused me to think more about going in a different direction.
I have to say that for those who can just roll out nice logos for yourself and other, you are truly Blessed! For me it has been a pain, going back and forth. I think I will settle on one soon and then start a more relaxed process of redesigning it once I have the website in place.
So any thoughts on this name change and look to it???
It is a great place, to be able to tap into this source of experience. it's SOOO WORTH $50 a year.
Thanks one and all.

No sooner had I posted the two above than Cam sent me these. I was guessing someone would suggest an Irish style of lettering but it makes sense it would be the Iranian meat tester (old joke for Cam)
The Irish style wouldn't be my style but I like the top layout, the placement has style but 'Cullinane' is not what I want to emphasize. thanks for the input though

I prefer Miles of Signs
(kind of like Robin of Loxley, Sherrif of Nottingham...)
Enamel signs in Cork, Cork signs in enamel, Vinyl signs in Cork, Cork signs in vinyl...
(could be a labyrinth with a few more lines like that...)

This has been fun to watch. I like Cam's top one, design-wise, but I think I would emphasize the SIGNS over the name, like in the second one. Anyone else?

I agree. Also, to add something new to this mix, I think it's worth trying to incorporate some version of Miles' signature into it. My logo has been "signature-based" for years and seems to work great.

My word, Ireland must be boring. It was Palestinian, not Iranian. If you insist on dredging up this hoary old tale from ten years ago, at least get it right.
Now that we have that out of the way, I think you are on the right track with the last couple of takes (before mine).

Just goofing around. I kept the circle but stuck it in the background. Trying to highlight the surname. (Just guessing on the year established)

After reading all these posts about the circle. Why not stop fighting it and simply change it to an oval. The long name "Miles Cullinane" would work much better if you would use an oval behind it to fill the space in better. Go back and look at all the posted ideas, and change them to ovals. In my opinion.

Sorry for the delayed response Miles. Much of the additional and more detailed items I wanted to post have already been mentioned. I just wanted to take a minute or three to show a recent “before and after” since many folks like them her on the board.
BEFORE
AFTER
Nice job! From where it started to how it currently exist, IMHO, is a great improvement in many areas. Glad you took the time (under a time crunch I understand) to embrace the comments and observations made and reinvested. I’m not aware of many signwriters that are 100% happy with their own mark and usually tweak it frequently until the end of time. Again, nice rework!
