This truck was lettered by my good friend Bob "Suitcase" Simpson, he started Bob Simpson Signs,Holyoke,Ma in 1966,after years as head Sign Artist for New England Sign Co. Holyoke, MA Looking at the style of phone number,I'd say he letterd this jewl in early 70's w/One Shot White & Imatation Gold & Hardcote Bulletin Colors. Bob is No.1a Lettering Artist in Western MA,looked up to by anyone that could letter or wanted to be a Sign Painter.
Kent Moss PS,I owe Stuart from Oz a post about Bob's two headed pinstriping brush. It always brought alot of attn. at the early 80's letterhead events.

Thank you for posting those pictures Ray! My husband and I are big fans of old door art. I have a full box of photos of truck doors. I use them as reference for new door art and some for new/old (faux) door art. But mostly I like to look at them and admire the great hand lettering and style. And this Bob Simpson is a true master!

Do you suppose if it had been lettered with vinyl it would still look as good after all this time?

NO!............of course, if you able to look into the future 30 years at something lettered with todays enamels, I doubt that job would look anywhere near as good as this one.

Not only is thr truck cool looking, and it's neat that you discovered it out there, but it's also really cool that Kent saw it and instantly knew who lettered it. I think we all grew up looking at and admiring the certain particular styles of our own hometown sign painters. Sadly, it is getting harder and harder to spot these old gems. Love....Jill

Actually, Craig, it was still working just 6 years ago. The owner told me there's still plenty of spare parts around for it and it was running when they parked it there in 2003. The kicker...first person who shows up with 1200 bucks owns it. If you know anyone looking for a fun restoration project, this one's a steal.
