Thanks to those who have expressed interest in the mural I have been working on. This has been a bit of a different project right from the get go. I originally was working on a different mural for the Brooks Communities in Bloom, but unfortunate timing and circumstances during a holiday caused them to award that contract to someone else. I was however offered the opportunity to do a second mural. This second mural came with a number of challenges. The budget, although reasonable, did not come close to covering the 125' x18' building.
The owners of the corrugated steel building did not want the mural painted directly on the building (thank goodness!).
I'd had a busy spring and some challenging health issues that depleted my strength and left me way behind in my work. Taking on the stress of a large mural was something I took considerable time to decide on. In the end the desire to paint won out and with some safeguards in place I agreed to the contract.
Although I came close to bailing on this one from dealing with the dreaded "committee", my direct contact was terrific, and in the end my solution worked well for all involved.
Rather than dealing with one mural which would have looked like a postage stamp on the building I chose to create a number of vignettes and connect them with faux oil pipes. Not only would it allow the sq ft of the mural to be spread out over the building, but it broke the mural down into a number of smaller and more manageable parts, that if need be could be completed by a number of different artists and still tie together by a common "framework concept" that would unify them.
Because I had a backlog of work to clear before commencing, I'm pressing deadlines and putting in some long hours to complete this mural. Fortunately my health has improved considerably and the work is very enjoyable and relaxing. I'm refusing to stress over this one. The fact that it is in panels means if I don't get quite done in time I can still install the majority of the mural and have it look "completed" for their deadline, should something throw a wrench in the progress.
Sometimes you have to think outside the box to cover your butt.....
I'll continue to post the panels on the Portfolio page as I complete them. Thanks for the encouraging comments.

Very nice design, Kelly - I like the way you "spread it out" with the connections. It also looks like you managed to deal with some windows without letting them control the process.......
when can I come up and help you paint?

Thanks for posting the concept drawing... I was wondering just how it would all fit together. Great solution to a difficult challenge!
I look forward to seeing it done!

Tommorrow Sonny! Let me know your flight #! I'll arrange a mini meet around you. There is actually another 40 feet of building to the the right of the maquette, which leaves room for a few more panels in the future should the funding appear. It's the mural with the potential endless growth, round the corner and down the street....

It reminds me the artist Thomas Hart Benton. He would paint murals with working theme or narrative.
Looks good!

Terriffic solution to an "interesting" situation- much more managable, and more intesting than a solid piece! Hope your health continues to improve-

Great design, Kelly. Keeps your eye moving all around the piece. I saw your two completed panels on the portfolio page. They look great. I cant's wait to see it all together. How're those ribs doin'? Good idea to start with your smaller panels first, give yourself time to work into the bigger ones as you are feeling better.

Well I am getting closer to winding this thing up. Pat and Ruth Welter are coming to visit and give me a hand as well as Graham and Barb Parsons. We might even have Lotti show up. I'm looking forward to their company.
