During my last workshop in April 2008, I was amazed to discover how the CNC had radically changed the way the sign industry manufactures it's product, rendering hand skills somewhat obsolete. A smart business plan would have included the purchase of a CNC router. As brilliant as the machine is, It was the handcrafting that I enjoyed. As the traditional ways fall by the wayside and technology produces signs with lightening accuracy, it's more important than ever to place good design before all else. As I prepare to leave the business full time to pursue other career interests I want to host a workshop that would offer some design and marketing knowledge that was passed on to me by my mentor. It was that key instruction that allowed me to practice the process of good design and has enabled me to continually grow as a designer.
So here's my schpeal
This workshop will focus exclusively on design. A rethink and fresh approach to the business of signs. When times are tight it’s good to explore options how we could have a broader appeal to a leaner market place
The workshop will instruct how to change the perception of your business from a sign shop to the “go to” source for marketing design. A design studio that produces signs rather than a signmaker that designs. Offering expertise before product will add value to your work and make it easier to sell it at a premium price. Through instruction and design exercises, the workshop will instruct how to create seamless, effective marketing design and apply it to a range of multi media including signs, print and web to interior and architectural design / consulting.
The dates are: June 5th, 6th, 7th 2009
The cost will be $900. for first time participants and $700. for previous participants.
I've lowered the prices from my last workshops to make participation more feasible during these economic times.
I have no current info posted on my website. If your interested just email me and I'll forward you a pdf info package.

I learned so much from the first workshop, that I now want more. The workshop gave me so much great information that has proven itself to really help my creativity, work and business.
I am hoping my busy schedule will allow.
It's a great drive over also....(and Noella's is on the way)
I can't promise anything, but I'll keep you posted.
Beautiful work by the way Shane,.....always is.
Peace, Bob

Thanks, It'll be great to see familiar faces as well as new ones in the studio one last time. It'll be a good in depth-study on the business of design, interspersed with Some Creemore Springs and a few laughs. I'll be sending out info packages this weekend to those that have requested so far. Here's some sampling of the cross section that will be covered :

Shane, I would love to attend but circumstances are prohibitive right now. Have you ever considered doing a video of the workshop? I think that would be a valuable tool to have. Just my 2 cents.

I've had that suggested to me before. Also as a webinar format. I've had thoughts of a book including projects from the last 20 years. ( the 9 years of previous photos, I'll keep in the cupboard).

M. Chapman could be doing this, as long as he's not the narrator (you see... he talks kinda funny), but the images are good! Also he usually leaves a few hours in the afternoon for a little nap, but nothing says the camera can't be running during that time !

Now, I wonder why I didn't think of that, Rene? Actually, I did think of it.
I filmed a bunch of stuff at Dan's last October and have been putting the pieces together in my spare time since then. Yes, all y'all (that's the plural form of y'all) that were participants will eventually get a copy. With the load of work around here there just hasn't been that much spare time.
This is off the subject, but hope that Shane will forgive me...Mike's father-in-law (Bill Bunting) is a retired minister who spent the majority of his professional life preaching for small congregations in Michigan and parts of Canada. He retired here to Texas and built and managed a large retreat and conference center for a wealthy man in Waco.
Over the past year or so we have been filming sermons of Bill's, compiling them on DVD's and distributing them free of charge to small churches in Canada who can't afford a full time minister. The expenses are paid by donations from folks who attend our local church and revenue from those DVD's that are sold here.
Bill does the lessons and I film, edit, copy, and prepare the mailings. Mike is the financial guy and takes care of the books. Presently we are distributing over 50 DVD's each month.
My apology for butting in on Shane's thread, but thought some might like to know what I do in my spare time.

I like to think of Shane as Canada's Gary Anderson. Nice clean designs that actually make you feel something. I'm sure a book would sell vey well. Consider SignCraft and Letterville as possible vendors.
The video idea has always appealed to me. We had Head TV long before webcams became popular. I still wish we had been able to generate the resourses to develop that more. We had a ton of fun and the possibilities were limitless.
Everyome is talking about YouTube today. What a valuable tool that has turned into.
Many years ago, before YouTube, Letterville was working on a very similar idea. Our problem at the time was low bandwith and the budget to finish the project. I'll bet most of you have never even seen this project.
The Man behind the graphics and video formatting was our own Bob Darnell. This was before any broadband was available so every video had to be reduced to it's smallest file size. Quality suffered as a result.
I would still love to see this area develop. We could add video relavant to Letterville from YouTube and make use of all the stuff you and I have kicking around. There's no better way to learn than by watching. Video of old meets from the 80's & 90's are a hoot too.
Didn't mean to hijack Shane's post, but a video is another way to reach those that just can't afford to attend these workshops. I used to suggest people sell their TVs to get to meets and workshops, but that never went over well.

I would suggest to anyone contemplating doing Shane's workshop to get there & do it!! Although we made a considerable investment travelling from Australia, the workshop has paid for itself twice over. Not only is Shane's knowledge in signmaking & design valuable, just seeing how else you can run a sign studio is a refreshing eye opener.
