I hope this is not a stupid question, but I just don’t know the answer.

In my sign making past I always used cut vinyl. But sometimes regular painting is the best pick. So how do I do that when I got no artistic painting talent.

I think it’s a matter of cutting the vinyl but weeding the negative. Then sticking that on the substrate and using a paint & roller…. If that’s a good method …. How long do I let the paint dry before I remove the vinyl (stencil)? Is there something ells then vinyl or paint roller I may want to use?

Acrylic paints, water based, do not really work with "stencils" .... you will often get a ragged edge.

Use enamel paint, 1-shot for example, and leave until at least touch dry before removing the stencil.

It can be done when wet, but not advisable.

Thanks Bushie

Your right Blake, I was a bit of a lurker. Truth is, I am only doing the sign work as a fun thing as my part time home business. I don't have the skill of most sign people but I do have lots of interest & perseverance.

Well I'm in the "pull it wet" camp. I let it set up enough that it won't sag then pull the stencil. I use 1shot.

I pull it when I'm bored... OH, wait.... Wrong thread.

I pull my paint mask when the paint is tacked up. this allows for the edge to flow over and not create a hard edge.

Welcome Bob

Depends on the substrate, and the distance it will be seen from. Bushie is right about the ragged edges on some substrates, say like cement rendering. But if it is two stories up, you will never see the edges. Now, if it is a rough surface, try to get quite an agressive "tack vinyl, and try to get as close to the surface as possible with the vinyl. At least wait for it to "tack off" before removing. Always pull away from the edges with the grain so to speak. If you leave it too long, chances are the paint will come with the vinyl.

Success is guaranteed if you use a paint mask vinyl (from any good supplier), place it on the surface in negative, choke coat it - that is paint the edges with the same or very close to colour of the substrate, let it dry, then paint with your desired colour. This will give you absolutely crisp edges, and a job anyone would be proud of.

Cheers - Gregg

Bob,
I want to speak kindly and not to run you down, but the world has numerous talented people devoting their all to learning to develop skills to market their talents. We served apprenticeships and go to meetings and worked as grunts for those that we might glean some help from. We all loose jobs to folks that know near nothing about the craft that have purchased some machine that helps generate sub standard level work. Perhaps your work does not fit this description, but if it does, please leave the work to the local sign folks that depend on it to feed their households.

YOu could just mark it out & paint it freehand.

Bob hasn't said how big (or small) it is, or what it is going onto.

You could attend a letterhead meet & get some first hand tuition, too.

Like a challenge?

Try this...

If you're able, set up your mask and apply as usual. Then, blast a little haze of enamel aerosol paint in, just enough to leave a ghost of the image. Pull the mask, grab a brush and get some practice in.

Just a thought...

Who can wait for it to dry anyway? ya just gotta see how it looks, don'cha!

iam with rick, there are some of us who can do the job, without a MASK, without a layout, just walk up to the wall with a stabilo and yard stick, make a few lines, and open a can a paint, and with the proper brushes make it look GREAT.......in less time and expense then what your gona do....AND WE charge more..........because we can do this IN HALF THE TIME. AND MAKE IT LOOK BETTER Cause we been doin this for years.........AS A FULL TIME JOB.
in this economy, WORKIN CHEAP IS REALLY DUMB.
besides all the above, you said "painting in the sun". NOW I HAVE TO ASK, what experiance do you have painting IN THE SUN? what paint do you need? what REDUCER works best in high heat applications?
do you NEED A FLOW ENHANCER? should you HAVE REPAINTED the wall........BEFORE LETTERING IT?
is the MASK GONA PEEL THE PAINT OFF THE WALL?
what do you do.....IF YOU HAVE A RAIN SHOWER HALFWAY THRU?
see what iam saying? so many variables, if you never done this............
my suggestion to you FIND AN OLD SIGN PAINTER, see if he can instruct you OR GIVE THIS JOB TO HIM...and you can LEARN AND HELP!!!
then you will understand why we DONT DO THIS STUFF
FOR LITTLE OR NO MONEY.

OP, he's in Canada. Don't worry, he's not going to be stealing your "Bubba's Lawn-Mower Repiar Service and Tax Retruns" account from you. - -

Anyway, Bob... Welcome to the forum. At least you are on here asking advice and not just putting up crappy looking stuff all over your neighborhood. I very seldom paint lettering myself and have no proof you are low-balling the prices in your area, so I will not be in the "I am God and the only one allowed to make those holy things called signs" category.

Hey, I was just yankin' your chain. Don't get your Speedos in a wad...... good points and probably a good idea or two in your post. I was just trying to encourage him to go ahead and try it himself... it's not like it's life and death, or some holy thing that only ancient sign-painters can do. -

Have any of you seen the "lawn signs" Bob is renting? He's touching a niche market that none of us probably touch or ever will. After seeing what he's doing, I want to help that in any way. When he starts taking the work away from the sign guys that have investment and committment, that's another story. Bob, thanks for breaking loose from being a lurker and behaving as a man.

thanks Rick. The area I live in & the kind of work I do, is not at all competing against most other shops. I rent out my signs for special occasions and usually do things on coroplast. Recently I was asked to do up a garage door for a local verity store. This is not my usual type of thing & I don't plan on it becoming my thing but I thought that vinyl will peal in the sun and paint will last but will also stick better. So I thought I would ask you pros about the painting method. Most of the replies are informative and makes me want to stay in touch. A few comments were not as nice but that’s O.K. Most people here (95%) are very good folks that makes me want to stay in touch & mingle.
