For every setback it seems we also get a step forward.... sometimes two.
We signed up another cool sign today... a contact we made at the home show a few weeks back. The couple were in my booth, excited about the dimensional work they saw displayed there. She aksed me if I had ever done pirates... and I flipped my book open to a design we had done for a theme park. It was instant love.
They have a themed pool area in their backyard and needed a sign. The design I showed them (which hadn't gone ahead) was adapted to their needs and the result is a fully dimensional sign called Turtle Cove... named after their pet turtle who's real name is 'Mud'.
The sign will be routered from 2" 30 lb Precision Board with a full size skull complete with hat modelled out of Magic Sculpt. It should be a fun project... Not pictured in the drawing will be a cameo appearance by the turtle sitting on top of the sign... perhaps with a hook and peb leg as he is missing a front and back foot in real life. I don't make this up. Really.
Back to work mateys... in Yarrow...

I like the gold tooth. And the bones! I wouldn't put a skull and crossbones on the tricorn. And make it less natty-looking, more beat up, like it was stolen from a real Admiral. Looks like a fun project.
On a side note, we have a local pirate-themed band who plays the bar scene. Their name is ARRRGH. Also have a band who dresses like they are Amish, called the EarthQuakers.

That sure is a treasure of a sign Dan. Just wondering, do you use enroute to model that in and how come you don't use Precision Board for the whole thing? Graham

The CNC router is a most awesome tool. But its only one of many tools we have in our shop. With EnRoute and the textures we have created (and yes this one is on the CD) its fun and easy to put the background and letters of the sign together. The bitmap texture was bent a little in Photoshop to match the shape of the sign.
As far as the skull... well, although we could certainly do it on the router its just plain old faster and easier to do it with Magic Sculpt in a full 3D situation as this is. It will be about 6" thick on top of the sign base. Its faster to model it by hand and more fun too. It will be possible to model a hollow skull textured and aged appropriately in much less time that I could create it in a software program. Its also more economical in terms of materials to do it in epoxy... and stronger too for the thin type of thing we are modelling. Magic Sculpt is VERY strong - especially when its modeled over some steel lath formed to shape.
And the rusty straps through the middle of the sign... the customer REALLY wanted them. In full 3D form they will not be too bad as the lettering and a second layer under them will be in front of the straps. Painting the straps dark will make them go away somewhat. Some things are worth fighting for... and others we can live with.

Hey Dan, When you say you bent the texture in photoshop is that like mesh warp, I use paint shop pro and all I can find is mesh warp, Just wondering what tool you use, I believe My Girlfriend and business partner has photoshop,She,s a web designer and now my painter. Graham
I just came back from N. Carolina, & was near the area where they are bringing up parts of Blackbeard's ship artifacts. There were tons of pirate souvenirs down there!

I bent the bitmap I created using the mesh tool in Adobe Photoshop(which I've only recently discovered.) Its a cool tool with tons of possibilities!
I'll be posting pics of the project as it proceeds. My client insists I get in touch with my darker side... she thinks I make everything 'too happy'. She wants 'knarly and mean'. The funny thing is that the client who I originally did a similar design for thought the image 'much too dark' for their project and so we lightened it up until everyine was happy. This go around we'll go in the other direction I guess.

The mesh tool in Adobe Photoshop is under Edit>tansform>warp You have to select what you are warping first unless the image you are warping is on its own layer.
Going warp speed in Yarrow...
