I was approached yesterday to place vinyl on windows!
What makes this different?
All windows on this house are 1 over 1, and the project is to convert them all to 6 over 6! (Multi pane look)
11 on first floor and 7 on second floor. None are the tilt-in type. One on garage to be 8 over 8. Figure to start there.
Plotting 1/2" strips to be applied to glass. First floor is easy enough. I can work at ground level, but working off ladder to do those on the 2nd floor will be a little tricky.
Project is straight forward, however I have no idea what to charge for this project, since I mainly do glass etching. Type of vinyl to use for long term?
Any suggestions or advice is welcome!
Before suggesting applying vinyl from inside, the homeowner thinks that the multi pane effect would not show well since all windows are double paned.
Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't take this job. First off its going to look cheap and cheesy and secondly window panes are out of style.
BUT if I had to take it and I HAD to do it. I would charge $80.00 per window, that evens out the one on the ground and the ones in the air

I think I'd agree with Bruce about it looking cheesy. Whether it's out of style or not depends on the age and architecture of the house. Paned windows look best on older, more colonial homes.
I have seen windows like this, but usually the strips are between the panes. It would be cool to make some 'faux' strips from wood or plastic and mount them on the outside of the glass. It would be a challenging job, but you could charge a good buck for it, and the end result would be much nicer looking. I'd think about using 1/2 in. PVC and VHB tape.
You might also check with someone like Outwater Plastics to see if they don't already have something like this made up, that you could buy.

Previous owner replaced old windows with vinyl replacements. This being a colonial salt box should have had multi pane windows, but apparently the previous owner opted to not pay the extra cost. I know the house and it needs the multi pane look! Presently doesn't look right.
I know from my experience, that Anderson has grids that install on the inside to give the appearance of multi panes. This was discussed but the new owner has been unable to find anything to fit his vinyl replacements.
We may try the garage window to see how it looks and how long to apply the strips. This window can not be seen from the road.

I have done this to a house and if you can wait until tomorrow I will get you shots of the house and the windows.
The job was done in 1/2 in hp stripe tape with a clear liner to stop it from stretching and then pulled off.
The windows do not look cheap and it was done on thermal pane s from the inside.
If done right they will be pleased.
Let me know if you would like shots to show them.

You indicated that they were on the inside. Do they show well from outside? The owner thinks that outside would be better, however, if can be done inside would eliminate the laddder work!
Thanks,
