I have a school customer who wants me to give them a price on lettering on their 'champions wall' in the clubhouse (indoors). The wall is concrete block, sealed and painted with 2 coats of burgundy paint. It is 7 feet tall by 8 feet wide.

They want about 5 or 6 inch high lettering to say "State Champions Class 1A 2008" and a logo of a wolf pawprint about a foot in diameter. This will be centered on the wall, and painted in white and grey.

Then around the logo stuff, they want the team members' names, 52 of them, painted in about 2 inch high letters. What would you charge for something like this?

I'm not a bit fond of working on block, especially this little stuff. Would any of the paint pens work for this? Need input....

Thanks

Blocks tend to come in three varieties around here, quite smooth, porous and "you've got to be kidding". I've used everything on brick from fitches down through regular quills.
Best case scenario $1500. Worst case scenario, I might pass. 52 names is a lot! It could be a real nightmare on bricks with those gigantic pock marks. For the average brick wall, probably in the $2000 range. Hopefully the gray they want is dark because I would be doctoring the white to get coverage in one coat. Having to double coat 52 names would be more like a career than a job [Smile]

Give them a choice of two different specifications.
#1, would be a 4'x8,smooth alumi-core panel
that they can install themselves-- total cost
$980.,
or #2, would be to their specifications and
cost $1970., if the concrete block had no more than three, 1/32nd inch open holes per square inch. Now it's up to you to sell them on the
right approach.

Thanks for the input. There won't be any aluma-whatever. They want it painted on the wall.

There are panels for three other championship seasons already there, and they want them to match. I believe the coach told me the women's auxiliary or women's club there painted them before. Maybe I should tell him to let them do it again. I just really don't want to do the job; too much hassle. I'd rather do it on a panel of some kind too; but it'd stand out like a sore thumb. I know,time-wise, the job is probably worth over a thousand dollars, but I seriously doubt they'll go for it.

the state chaps and the paw print could be done easily for $6-700. now the 52 names......gets to be more of a pain, unless you can get that part of the wall....with a couple more coats of the existing paint to fill in the voids. doin small lettering on block, is tough.......unless you put down 2-5 coats of paint.......to bring it all up to one level.
you could let the WOMENS what ever...do the small stuff))))))

Can you use paint mask and spray or stencil the names on? If you are careful with your layout you should be able to avoid at least the horizontal seams.
Price high enough and the ladies auxillary will do it. [Wink]

I think I'm gonna give this one to the ladies, also. I just can't justify giving them the price it's worth. Let 'em break out the craft paints.

I'd think about a mask or stencil if the letters were larger and/or up higher on the wall. But these are at 'walk right up and touch them'level and any bleed-thru's are going to really show.

Mark Baty had the first right answer. I have done this type of work several times for the local schools. Another option is to mount a BANNER on the wall with the required graphics. 3rd choice is the new WALL GRAPHIC vinyl from 3m: IJ8624. Meant for this exact scenario - concrete block indoors.

Since the wall has several coats of paint on it, I'd ask them about doing everything in vinyl instead. It should hold up well enough and be much easier than trying to paint all of that on there. With the right selection of fonts, it would be hard for anyone to know it was vinyl unless they picked at it. As an added bonus, you could actually MAKE some money on the job.

Simple.....I would treat the names like lettering the old race cars.....single stroke casual lettering using a fitch. Maybe $10 per name. Try lettering on a similar texture sample. It's not that difficult. Even making a pounce pattern only needs to be quick and rough because you don't have to follow it exact. Try something like DOM CASUAL. Gray for the names so yo never want to double coat single stroke letters.

I would go with George!

Without seeing the actual texture of the block and pock marks, it's hard to tell.

I usually take the base price on smooth and start multiplying x2 x3 x4 etc

x2 is light lettering on dark background

x3 is "smooth" block/small holes

etc etc ,,,, when it gets to the PITA Level either you back off or they don't accept the price!

George's Prices look good to me with a string line and 1/4" soft fitch.

PS: As long as not too many names are longer than:
John Doe, etc!

I've lettered on concrete block many times. That's why I'm kinda straying away from it. I don't want to be there a week, and I don't want it to look sloppy.

John, would you use 1 Shot or an acrylic? I don't much care for lettering with them, but would the acrylics not have less tendency to "bleed" out into the cracks and holes?

I use 1 Shot.......also try to use all caps.
Also try for 2 1/2" letters or anything bigger than 2" if you can. Its much easier. This shouldn't take more than 1 day on site.

I'm with John on all caps, but have never used "1-shot" enamels on walls .... always acrylics.

A little harder to letter with unless you find the right brush.

In my own opinion..................I would pass! You could be doing a "money making" job!

My price would be so high that I would be able to spend an hour on each letter and it still wouldn't be done by the end of the school year!

Letters that small on a cinder block will not make them happy no matter how long you spend on the job. Someone there is stubborn and those type of people, as I get older, annoy me. Try to find someone there with so common sense!
