I would be willing to bet everybody went for the new ones. They are brighter and in the proper format for the card holders...they just jump out and beg to be picked.

What about displaying the vertical card vertically? I like it better because it is simple and more "graphic" looking...and I don't care for yellow either.
But then I'm not one of your customers, either.

Well, what happened is that more cards got picked up.
The stack of white cards is the same stack sitting in the same tray for nearly a year. Folks rarely picked them up. Most of the time, I had to pick one up and put it in their hand for them.
The stack of new cards had to be refilled at least once a week. I never had to put a physically pick a card up and hand it to a client.
Does this mean that the design is better? Not really. I actually had two clients (both women) in the past 4 weeks to tell me they like the white cards better. But for some reason, folks picked up the new yellow cards and ignored the white ones.
So, while the new yellow cards may not be the better design to some aesthetically speaking, they seem to be more effective in doing their intended job.

I agree with Raymond. I like the original one's better..They just were not presented correctly.
my two cents.
Edited to add..I just looked back at the partial wording on the sign behind the card holders.
The parts that I read sounded very negative towards potential customers.
Any chance you can post a picture of the entire diplay Glenn?
I only ask because I only used my nose that seemed to be able to smell out bad customers, and I weeded them out easily. The good smelling ones always worked out well. I never printed nor stated any "threatening" stuff.

A few years ago a major marketer held a study on purses. They asked a number of women which purse they liked. All of the gave a report as which one and why they liked one..
Then the study was declared over and all the women were told,, go ahead and take home one.
None of them selected the one they reported as being the best. They all took home a different one than what they reported as liking.
Later a number of purse designs were presented at a store. The most popular selling were the ones women selected when they left the previous study.. the least selling were the ones supposedly reported as being good designs.
Conclusion condensed. We will report what we like,, but liking and being effective are two different concepts.
In this card study. Some said they liked one or the other,, but one obviously was much more effective...

(That way, when they're shopping around, you'll get two phone calls instead of one; you can give them two different prices, a cheap one & a dear one, and when they come to give you the work, well, you did quote them the high price, didn't you...)

Well the one on the right is laying on it's side in relation to the lettering, hence the one on the left reads without having to tilt your head... people are lazy when it come to reading things... I think either one of them looks great... but interesting results all the same Glen.

I agree Neil. I wouldn't pick the one on the right either. It's printed sideways. How well do you think it would be received if you lettered a car or truck sideways?

Both cards look good, but the new one is better. I like yellow. Used it on my last card and got good results. And glenn, do post a pic of that sign behind the cards, sounds like some stuff we might want to use. All of us dont have that "nose" like grundy.

I'll try the white cards standing up and see how it goes. I doubt it will make a difference but I've been wrong before.
As for the sign in the background, it reads as follows...
NOTICE
DEPOSITS: Effective Jan. 2, 2007 a 50% deposit will be required on all orders exceeding $100.00 before production can begin.
Orders under $100.00 will require full payment up front.
BAD CHECKS: A fee of $40.00 will be charged on bad or bounced checks.
Check Fraud will be prosecuted.
APPOINTMENTS: Due to the current workload and the importance of being able to complete projects on time, Glenn is available by appointment only.
Glenn is not available between the hours of 11am and 1pm.

Anyhow, back to the cards I did find it interesting that the number of cards taken went up considerably.
One of the next things I'm going to try out are custom printed envelopes. Several years ago, we printed some using our deskjet printer. On the lower left corner of the envelopes we added "Warning: A well designed sign may cause fatigue due to increased business." The word "WARNING" was in bold red letters. We found that it did get attention. While I was at a city council meeting concerning some new sign regulations, one of the council members even remarked positively about the envelop and held it up for the others to see.

I like what can be done with a vertical card, but the issue may be the practicality of it... while looking for something in a card file or rolodex, vertical cards aren't as easy to quickly flip through while looking for the 1 you want.
I like the colorful one, but the white one would probably appeal to corporate-type people more, especially if it were vertical.
I don't think your rules are negative. I have similiar rules posted in my shop. My returned check fee is max amt allowed by law and I charge for vehicles that aren't washed prior to drop off. I think in some states you have to have it posted to charge fees for bad checks.

Yellow is better for "picking your teeth", and it was only Librarians that chose the other. Actually "color RULES". I like the other design myself and would like to see that design on a dark cark,...ooooooo, of course standing upright. My .02
