I have a Compaq 6710b Notebook operating on Windows XP Pro. It has an inbuilt media card reader that caters for SD, MS/Pro, MMC and XD cards. My friends MS card works fine when inserted so I know the reader isn't faulty.
Here's the problem, I have SD cards for my camera and cell phone, the reader picks up on the card when its inserted as the drive activates and I get the bing bong noise on insertion. However when I click on the drive it says please insert a card. Exactly the same thing happens when I use a multicard reader on a USB link.
I have downloaded all the drivers from the HP website and from Microsoft and I still have the same problem. I'm at a bit of a loss as I'm no whizz with computers. Does anyone know what else I can try before I have to resort to paying a technician to sort it out for me?
Most blog sites say that people have had this problem when operating on Vista but there doesn't seem to be anything associated with XP Pro. I have tried removing and reinstalling drivers too.
HELP!!!!
BTW, my SD cards work fine on other peoples laptops.

Anne, one thing you could check is to see if they are plain SD cards or the newer SDHC cards (what are referred to as FAST SD CARDS...) If the SD cards are some of these newer, bigger, faster cards, a lot of the older readers won't read them. I've run into that problem with my cards....
You could test that by finding someone with an old 512 mb SD and seeing if your reader will read it...
If that's what it is, you can buy a USB reader that will recognize the SDHC cards for cheap-cheap over the internet...

Hmmm, thanks Jon, I tried that and no luck, the laptop is only two months old and the SD cards range from 5 years old to 3 months old and nix, its very frustrating. Thanks for the advice tho

if I'm reading this right, you're card works fine on your friends computer... and your friends card works fine on your computer...
I'm no techy kind of computer whiz either, so looking for the low tech solution &/or temporary solution is often my approach... and this is certainly a low tech suggestion, but...

Good suggestion, Stephen. My mother-in-law couldn't get her SD card to work a while back and she had accidently gotten the little switch flipped somehow.... flipped it back and it's worked fine.

Try right-click on "My Computer"; select Properties, click Hardware tab - then Device Manager. Find on list: "Secure Digital Host Controllers" & sub: "SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller". Right-click for Properties. Under General, at bottom, click down-arrow & see if Device is Enabled. If so - have no clue why it's not working; except keep tryng. (sometimes it might not be readable if it wasn't removed properly from another machine)
