Ok, I am (again) looking into vinyl cutters. The Summa rep called me I am considering their 30" for around $2500. He also encouraged me to buy Flexi Sign for $1000 bucks more. He said both would be compatible with my imac running Leopard. I have also been looking into Sign Warehouse's Vinyl Express, it is $2000 with a bunch of vinyl and LXI Expert Software. I haven't enquired as to its compatibility with imacs. Would I still need Flexi Sign? . Maybe used is a possibility, I am looking to get my feet wet here.

Im sure the way things are these days you could shop the hell out of a summa plotter and fexi program. make THEM come down as low as they can.
When I started out I used vinyl express and it was the same as flexi, LOT less money, and no you wont need flexi also to complete your sign/plotter setup. Dont be one of those people that have 5 sign programs, costs too much.
I used vinyl express for about 5 or 6 years until i got flexi 6.?. i even sold the vinyl express didnt get much but thats fine. im also still using the vinyl express plotter from 99

My Summa T-750 has been a problem free workhorse. As for Flexi, I really think it's an overrated and much overpriced sign program. If you know how to use Illustrator well, you can get a bridge program like MacSign or MagiSign for a lot less and produce just about anything Flexi will do.

If my Summa plotter ever breaks down I won't even consider buying another brand. I had Flexi and never did like it; I use Signlab but it's pricey - but well worth it.

Get the Summa. I also have a Summa T-750. The biggest reason why I bought a Summa was because they're out of Seattle, WA. I went up there put the machine in the truck and brought it home. If it ever breaks down I could just as easily bring it back to Seattle for repairs. Seattle is just a 10 hour drive from Sacramento.

We have the Summa D60, 24" vinyl cutter, and the Summa DC4, 54" printer/cutter using FlexiPro - love the whole system, no problems whatsoever. The D60 runs all day, every day. My 2.42 cents worth (Canadian equivalent!)

You just confirmed most of what the sales rep claimed for the Summa. They did advertise MacSign for $600 which sounds a lot better than Flexi. Since gas is so "cheap" again I could just pick it up myself.

Okay, my two cents worth...after fighting with Rolands and one ill fated Bobcat for years we got a Summa. The Summa glowed like a gift from the promised land from the moment it came out of the box. We've now got three of them and love them.
Personally I love FlexiSign too but I fully admit I'm a little biased. I started with Flexi 12 years ago and it's almost second nature to me now. It'll do everything I can think to ask of it.

Kevin, you have a couple of issues here. First, what are you now using for your design application? If your using Illustrator, why do you need Flexi other than to drive the Summa?
I've owned t Graphtecs so far and other than using Signpost way back in OS 9, they all run directly out of Illustrator via Graphtec's FREE Cutting Master. It may be a better, easier solution to your needs.
I also run HP9000s out of a windoz RIP and Cutting Master registers and cut's perfectly right out of Illy on the pre-printed roll stock.

Flexi works great for cutting, however, if you are using a Summa, I believe they come with a cut program for Macs. Just import your Illustrator files into the free cut program. It may be just me, but I only use Flexi for printing and cutting, I HATE it for design.
