I did it again, I slid off the road into a ditch. I was delivering some corex signs to a guy. I thought it would be a nice drive with the new snow and all.Thank God, there wasn't any cars coming the other way. I did the classic slide all over the road, both lanes, and then popped into the ditch. I kinda sat there for a bit, then I thought, I thought, "Gee, let's try to drive out of here" I slowly drove out of the ditch and back onto the highway. I really suck driving in snow or ice, They didn't teach me about that kind of driving back in East Los Angeles.

When we were kids growing up in Saskatchewan we used to go to icy parking lots and try all sorts of stunts with our cars including the famous 'Rockford Files reverse turnaround'. Doing all those stunts gave us a lot of practice for handling icy conditions on real roads.

Driving on snow is hard...driving on ice is really, really hard. Every move has to be done very gently. All four wheels of the vehicle need to spin in unison. If the back wheels get to spinning, the tail is going to start whipping around and loss of control can happen. If you let up off the gas too suddenly, the compression of the engine may cause the rear wheel so stop spinning ( worse in standard shift ) A wheel that isn't spinning turns into a sled runner, the back end will try to pass the front end. If you apply the brakes too hard, the front wheels will stop spinning and the vehicle will take off in a direction you usually don't want to go.
Start slowly and gently, make no harsh moves with the gas, steering or brakes. If you are driving a standard shift and you let up on the gas and the back end starts to come around...push in on the clutch. If you hit the brakes and the car won't steer or takes off in a different direction...get off the brakes. Being able to steer is more important. You can't stop, you might as well be able to sterr and try to avoid hitting anything hard. Going up hills can be a challenge too. Make sure you are carrying enough momentum to get you up the hill without having to push on the gas harder....that will make the rear wheels spin and result in loss of control.
I took my driver test in a foot and a half of snow when I lived in New Jersey. It rarely snows in these parts. When it does, I stay home....NOBODY around here knows how to drive in the snow and I don't want to dodge all the out of control 4 wheel drives...they go good in snow...real good but they don't stop any better than any other vehicle

George, I always tell these 4 wheelers that everyone has 4 wheel brakes. Just cuz you can take off in 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you can stop any faster than the next guy.

Don't tell me you can't drive well...just keep that rig of your's on the road, where it needs to be, not in some gully.
Just SLOW DOWN.
No more slipping and sliding, Please.
If you ever messed up your Ride, I'm not sure, if I could ever forgive you...so from now on, just cruise, as if there is no brake pedal. Slow, but sure.
Use your gears to slow down, and stay focused...

Alicia, has anyone even hinted to you that you are an accident waiting to happen? Good thing that isn't the front end of your truck! You might not be here! The good Lord is certainly looking out for you. Guess I'll have to put you on my prayer list. Peace, Don

Well now, lady, what were you doing just prior to the accident???...jammin' to the cranked up tunes, talking on the cell phone, text messaging, putting on lipstick, makeup,or doing your nails, reading the Wall St. Journal, unwrapping your Egg McMuffin....or all of the above??
Just kidding......glad you're OK.
Having spent most of my life in Ohio, I know what driving in snow and ice is. Here in southern Mississippi, it's a foreign concept. Yet, last Thursday, we had OVER 6 INCHES!!! Man, you talk about a circus. No salt, no plows, and most of the idiots on the road had no idea what to do. Cars off the road all over the place; wrecks all over; there were actually some people sitting in the middle of the road, still spinning their bald tires...traffic backed up for blocks.
By Sunday morning, it was gone. That's a good thing.

Being Canadian, ice/snow driving is second nature. We're born with this ability to handle it, the snow is in our blood. Good to hear nothing bad happened.

It's what we drive on 7 months of the year... Too cold here even to use salt or calcium... Did 3 trips out since winter started (october) 600 km each way.
Winter tires aren't really an option here, summer tires may be...
