My cousin gave me his brand new dell laptop and told me to "Get all the crap off of it" I kept it for a week and played on it, removing and removing and removing anything from, aol, netzero, earthlink that wonderful dell support, and norton antivirus and firewall and windows defender. disabling windows firewall, windows updates, removing windows messenger and last but not least that irritating "permission window". i got that thing everytime i clicke don something.

After all was said and done I removed over 2.5 gigs of "useless crap" disabling ANYTHING from starting up and it STILL runs slow. I liked the "look" of it. it was new and cool. Took me a while to find simple things like add/remove programs.

I cannot imagine throwing an adobe illustrator, flexisign and photoshop on one of these puppies. talk about drag ass!! Is this vista really running all that slow? Ill stay with Xp for a couple more years I drug windows 98 out past XP's arrival so im good with no change.

How much ram is on the computer?

I'm running Vista-32bit on my design station (dual-core) with 2 gits of ram and Vista-64 on my home computer (quad-core) with 8 gigs of ram. They're doing great.

However, the sales computer at the front desk is running XP-pro with 1.5 gigs of ram on a single-core 3ghz computer and its as slow as molasses.

I have no problems with Vista and love it, but don't think you are going to buy a $1000 computer and be happy with vista. My 2 cents and bottom line

this vista really running all that slow?
Yes, it is running slow. It is not so obvious why though. There are more than a few services running in the background that HOG your cpu.
There is one that checks media for any lack of licenses and prevent it from running. There is a service that checks to see if you are running hd video and if so degrades the play back. There is a service that checks to see if you are running a High Def monitor that is not compliant to VITSA's demands. If it is not then it degrades the play back.

Some persons are happy with it. However, the rest of the world hates it. The only market for VISTA is the new PC's being sold with it already installed.

Personaly. as a user it find it adequate but not likeable. To many clicks to do the same thing as before that took only one.

Too many changes for the sake of changes all of which force a user to relearn that which was simple before.

As a GEEK user. VISTA SUCKS. I cant say it strong enough. IT sucks. Under the hood it is nothing more than windows 2003 server with a pretty user interface. What a waste.

Windows 7 is out in beta and already looks like the REAL VISTA as was pronounced before its release. Look for modular system that will force you to purchase each part of which you want it to do. Rumors speculate windows 7 will price out around $400 a copy for the levels a business will need to run. Its over for windows as we know it.

As for glenns machine..

Is it a celeron? IF not...
I will bet if I spent just 20 mins that machine will run so fast as to make Vista look like molasses. I will just about bet my newest machine there is a configuration challenge making it run slow.

Bruce, I've got Vista-64 and it's pretty fast on this new machine. Same as Glenn, quad-core and 8 gbs of ram. It's an HP that was on sale for $1,000. Of course it was loaded with crap. Vista took a little getting used to... I was forced to upgrade Adobe CS2 to CS4 because Photoshop wouldn't install properly. I'm running Corel 12 and the only problems have been with font navigator. Fonts just uninstall themselves for no reason from time to time. I don't know if it's because of the operating system. I agree, the "permission window" is a PIA. How did you get rid of it?

Bruse, I have a friend who bought a Dell laptop with vista- he has the same opinion as you do about it. Waste of money, totally, and sluggish waste of time, compared with XP on the same machine.

Another friend, a nongeekish one, actually likes it.

Funny ... I was looking on Dell's website today...just checking out their business desktops...and on the business computers they will install XP OS for no additional charge instead of Vista.

Plus, on the business side... you can get your Dell configured WITHOUT all the trial software and crapola that you don't want on your machine anyway.

Prepare to pay more overall though... not quite sure why the business units are more than the home side of their site... they seem to be similarly configured...other than the extra crapola.

Crapola - I kind of like that word.

Crapola would be a good name for a Jukebox. We're getting new Dells to replace the old ones at the giant corporation I work for. It seems like the I.T. department finds it easier to manage machines from one manufacturer and they like Dells tech support. The corporate I.T. people won't allow Vista to be used either. The new Dells will have 64 bit XP and they'll be decrapified.

Just wanted to add that last year I got a deal from Dell on a new business computer. I was able to configure it precisely to suit my needs (I got XP and also a floppy drive) I can use the new computer along with my 10 year old (never seen the Internet) production computer seamlessly.
So glad I did not opt for Vista.
Love....Jill

I noticed that dell and some other guys did NOT offer a downgrade on new comps, I wonder if they have changed their tune now? I tried to buy a new dell bout 7 months ago and they only had vista and would NOT downgrade it for xp, I dont know why.

these companies should know better than to jump on new OS and hold on to the preceeding

Last night on my Vista-64 system, I recorded a tv show to watch later, watched a tutorial on Photoshop CS4 while I had CS4 open -- all at the same time and without a glitch or strain.

Darn that Vista!

Ast night while watching TV on my XP machine,, I rendered a DVD for an event and never dropped one single frame, chatted online, printed flyers and postcards, burned a DVD, and ran the anagraph cutter and printed 15 yard sign panels on the encad.
All of this at the same time.. All this on a poor old p4 3.0 1 gig ram machine running plain old XP pro. What more can I do to overload this machine? Don't know! Every port was in use including the pinnacle capture card and still this old technology didn't stall. Maybe I better stick with it because its way faster than my vista machine.

When we picked up Gump's new Dell laptop, it was already loaded with WinXP SP2, but I figured he wouldn't mind a makeover, so I installed the Windows Inspirat program onto it (a free download) and it converted the desktop into a Vist like interface.
The coolest part is that it neither slowed down the system nor caused any conflicts with programs since it was still basically running XP.

Last week he was home for the holiday and mentioned that most of the kids in his classes were stymied as to why they were having so many problems with crashes on the same computers with Vista installed on them, yet his was running like clockwork. After he let the secret out, half the kids at his campu were all looking to roll back to XP and install Inspirat...all the bells and whistles without the hassles of a crappy OS.

OP, the "Old Me" was pretty crusty, but likable none-the-less. What's this "New Me" like? Does it still run around the yard in Speedos? And you are not a piece of crap, no matter what your Republican neighbors say.
