Another question I have is this: I opened a JPG and thought I could select out an object in it from the background but I ca'nt even select the JPG. Are these not editable? I did have the Help topic open too. One more and I'm off and running--In Corelx4- I was playing with fountain fills and later I decided to 'make all settings as default'. I wonder if that move caused all the boxes and circles I pull up to fill with the last color I chose. How do I undo that permenantly?

Yes, a .JPG is editable. You should be able to use the various 'Masking' tools to isolate items. You can then do things just to that area, or even convert it to an object...
In Draw, the problem your having about it asking about 'Making the settings default' is caused by selecting the color before you actually make the object. In other words, if you select your circle tool, then click on a color before making the circle, it will ask you that question.
To get it back to normal, select a tool (like the circle tool) and then click on the square at the top of your palette that has the X in it... save that as default. That will get you back to objects not having a fill in them when you create them.
After that, always create your item on your work area, THEN select the color you'd like it to be... it won't ask that question then.
Also, if you are just learning Coreldraw, you might find the forums at this link very informative. Also some decent galleries to show you what can be done with it...

OK-Thanks. I did both things. I Cutout a bird from the background and dragged it into Corel. Too bad the bird Pic was too small though. It looks horribly pixelated up close. Client may have sign printed on banner as a 4x8. Got to find a national source that does them for $1 a sq. ft. ha
