I've got this customer who keeps sending me stuff to do that she comes up with in some office program and I have trouble dealing with them. She just sent me a logo she wants me to use on a sign, but it's in pdf.

When I try to enlarge it to a useable size, it breaks up and becomes all pixelated. Is there a way I can do something to it, so it won't break apart like that? It's just unuseable like this.

If your customer saves the file in PDF "Pre-Press" resolution instead of "for viewing only", then you can open the file in Adobe Illustrator CS2. Try that and see if that works for you and your customer without too much grief.

good luck

Hi Janice, and thank you very much for trying to help. However, I did open it in CS2 and it still is pixelated when I try to enlarge. And to compound things, my customer is as dopey as I am.

When I told her about the pre-press/view only option....it was, like "huh?"

So I guess you'll have to explain in a little more detail. Consider who you are dealing with.

And again.....thanks so much.

Dale...It sounds like your customer is sending you a low resolution bitmap image. Not much you can do about the pixelation when it is blown up.

Tell her to scan the logo at the highest resolution she can and send it to you.

Other option is to ask her who created the logo, get their contact info and have them send you the original artwork in vector format.

You shouldn't have to explain to someone how to use their own computer & software, nor can you be expected to. The worst thing that's happened to the sign biz in the last 20 years is everyone getting a computer and trying to make their own "designs."

Dave is right. Whatever size bitmaps she puts into a PDF is the size you're going to get. She probably doesn't know what a pixel is or anything like that, so just give her the max number of kilobytes that you want to wait to download.

Tell her she can't take her logo off of the internet/web - it won't be usable. Usually that's where those low res logos come from.
