Seems like the way to make money with those involves production. Needing to sell enough to keep the machine printing all day. The technology seems to move so fast that in three years most everything has difficulty competing with the new technology. When I go to the city and see the shops with flatbed printers, I don't see how the sticky back folks could compete with them. Joe, I hope you enjoy your new toy and the associated learning curve. I'd like to get one in a few years.

The begining of your post is the most troubelsome.

" new TOY, HOPE to make money."

Should be new TOOL to make money so I can buy new toys.

Either way, Joe, congrats on your new venture.

That looks like an Encad 736. Good machine if all you plan on doing is indoor stuff. That machine technology is over five years old. That's when we bought one.

Seeing that the machine is no longer available for sale new, parts may be an issue in the future. Encad service was spotty and expensive.

Some maintenance tips... Run the machine to do at least three or four test patterns every other day. The heads will clog easily, especially if you are using the pigmented inks. The dye inks aren't so much an issue but you still need to run the machine often.

Because this is an aqueous inkjet, the material is going to be more costly than solvent material. You have to keep this machine in a very clean area. Keep your material in a dust free area. Make sure you lightly tack cloth the material when you load. Wear cotton gloves when handling the material as any fingerprint will show in the final print.

Do not fall for the second party inks. they do not work as well as OEM. There is a reason why they are cheaper and it is not because Kodak/Encad are out to rip you off.

Have fun with your new toy. Hope you got it really cheap.

dave, it WAS EBAY))))) such a deal i got, cost me as much to go pick it up & bring home, as what i paid for it))))it was in NORTH ATLANTA!!!!
CHRIS ITS an ENCAD 736, 36" indoor/outdoor aqueous inkjet, like bruce said. iam only using GO+ ink in it so its got some outdoor life and you can laminate it to extend its life. iam just lookin for something to do small stuff, aint never gona do a wrap!!!!
some times i get sign i need to really have a picture rather then tryin to cut all the colors in vinyl, and if i can get it to print well enough i might try some ART PRINTS on canvas or photo paper.
RICKIE, you make what you said sound kinky))))))

I have a 60" encad and use it all the time. YEs its older. But yes it runs fine and is adequate for plenty of work.

Yes, its a 736.. I had one before and ran jobs on it at least 3 times a week.
Ink? its so cheap now that its a non factor.
Heads? less than 1/3 of what they used to cost.
Parts? lots of them available. Run the heck out of it until it drops.

OP got this machine so cheap it cost him more for gas to retrieve it than what he paid for it.. A really good way to climb the learning curve.

Good for you, Joe... looks like it prints fine! Have fun with it.

What's funny to me is how most of the guys who have negative things to say about it do not even personally own a printer themselves.... also do not know what you want to do with it, how much you have in it or even the facts about the inks, materials and parts... [Razz]

So I'd regard their opinions about as much as they would mine if I started instructing them on how to mix paint.... [Rolling On The Floor]

Joe,I hope yours works well for you!

I was considering getting one two years ago...but finally decided against it. There were a few in Qld for around $250, (no warranty) which may still have been good- buy one, & keep one as a spare. There's a new Encad clone made in Indonesia, (or China) which was being pushed a lot, two years ago, by some importers/dealers. $3000 brand new. Some of those are now turning up on the 2nd hand market.

I ended up getting the HP Designjet 650C plus a spare one- maybe a 'worse' unit, but it HAS made money for us- I only wanted the black pigment ink, and 36" width, & not any photo printing abilities.

I later got an Epson 3000 to fill-in better quality black in smaller stuff to make screen positives. (That was $180, 2nd hand & in good order, no freight costs)

There's always a learning curve, and idiosyncracies to sort out...what fun!

Listen to Bruce on this. This how we started our friendship years ago talking about problems with an Encad. Those things like to clog, keep doing tests or use regularly.
Be careful of third party inks, plenty of info on this BB on for maintaining an older printer.

Jon, I do know what I'm talking about. I looked into printers when they first came out and have followed their development and the price wars ever since.

NO, I don't have one for two very good reasons:

1. I don't have, OR WANT, the market to support one even if it was given to me. Nor the time, hassles or workshop space.

2. When I need them, I buy at a very reasonable price, high quality prints locally. Add a percentage plus design & install costs and laugh all the way to the bank.

Obviously OP has the time to play with "Toys" and I wish him luck and lots of fun.

Ok, ok, you're an expert. You know exactly how much materials are for an Encad 736 and how it works. And you know how much time he spent researching it and who he talked to about it... enough that you are qualified to tell him he bought a lemon, and can laugh your ass off about it.

I'm sorry, wasn't trying to offend you by assuming you didn't know those details. [Razz]

I was just encouraging OP a bit, since y'all immediately start telling him he's made a big mistake, without even knowing what the heck he has in mind for the machine. It will work fine for what he is going to do with it.

/just messin' with ya
//hey, I know y'all like giving OP a hard time
///he can handle it [Wink]

I wasn't speaking negatively of this machine. I did own one. I liked it. However, it is good for indoor stuff only. The outdoor pigment printing is for short term only. I mean short term. It is so short term that I wouldn't even bother marketing it for outdoor use. I would never use a GO ink print from this machine on an outdoor sign that was going to any sort of permanent.

The dye inks (GA) will give you the best colors. the GO inks are subdued and nowhere as vibrant as the GA inks are.

The 736 did have, from what I remember, dual lnes for switching between the GA and GO inks. It was too much hassle for us to be bothered to do it because of the limited outdoor life.

This machine will make you money if you can live within it's limitations. I made a pile of money with mine. Joe could, too.

sonny my apoligies, BUT, YOU WAS CONSIDERED for my overnite stay!!!!!! really. just so happened my wifes niece, her job required her to take a condo in BUCKHEAD. they hada spare bed room. the trip was on a thursday, got to atlanta 9 ish, slept till 10 mext morning and on to WOODSTOCK to pick up printer.
the ONLY FRICKIN DAY ATLANTA GOT RAIN THIS YEAR, guess when that was??? right the friday i was there.
i drove all the way back to ATMORE, AL. in the rain)))))) i took hennies 2002 toyota camery on the trip. it gets 30 MPG!!!!!!!! and a nice ride to boot.
next time iam up that way, i damn sure will stop in, and if you come this way you alway got a place to relax.
like curt said, for what i paid for it, NO HARM, NO FOUL. i had a local guy with a "printer" do me some 3" x 6" race car stickers. nothin fancy. i did the design, sent him the file in the format he wanted, all he had to do was put it on the screen, make 10 with a yellow background, and 10 with purple background. DUN!
he and i had a previous conversation and he SAID:
if you need something printed, i will do them for you AT $3.00 SQ FT. well i had figured that for these.
i went to pick em up and for 2.5 sq ft of vinly, it cost me $60.00, i paid it gave em to the guy for what i paid forem. didnt cost me, but thats when i said i need a SMALL PRINTER for stuff like this SO I DONT GET RIPPED AGAIN.
and that set the purchase in motion.
i did speak with curt & r.t. who BOTH HAVE HAD ONE OF THESE. so based on their EXPERTISE of use and operation, and the fact i know and trust em both as a couple of my best freinds(did i tell ya, good best freinds are hard to come by, and i got some of them here, and really appreciate them)and wouldnt steer me wrong. so yea it was RESEARCHED well before i laid down any money.

If my math is not wrong,2.5 sq ft of vinyl at $3.00 a sq is $7.50 , not $60.

That's Durty Mcnasty....My Wholesale guy says $3 a sq and charges $3 a sq. He runs a bunch of stuff all together to keep it profitable for him I guess.
If I send him a few one offs I might wait a few days for his orders to gather, but If I send him 100 sq ft or more order, I might get it tomorrow.
Another thing is if my artwork is off, like fonts not converted or other obvious mistakes, my print goes to the bottom of the pile until he has time to call me. he won't design anything or mess with peoples files. maybe there's a design fee stuck to the bottom of that $3 a sq ft. there, OP.

There has to be way more to that story. Seriously.

Besides, who would pay the bill when it was almost 9 times the quoted price? I wouldn't. Then pass it along for the sixty bucks? Something is terribly amiss with the whole scenario...

Have fun with your new toy.

My guess is that OP asked him how much are they? (per sq. ft.)

The guy answered him Three Dollars (each)

OP didn't hear "each", and the printer guy didn't hear "per sq. ft."

By the way, I wouldn't ever print anything for less than $60... but I always make sure my customers understand the price. (50% down helps with that too)

bruce, the 1st conversation was a couple months prior to my having him DO ANY PRINTING. so when i decided to to have him do these, i called, was no price discussion. asked him what he needed to print these, he said a cdr so i emailed it to him. went in to pick em up was his wife/girlfriend/worker came outa his office with the BILL @$3 EACH...!!! i had told the guy who wanted them, i would have em that day. she said $60, i paid it, not happy and to save all any problems....took my stickers and left.
END OF STORY.....
should i have said something? yes. I DIDNT.
did he forget what he told me? I GUESS SO!
will i ever speak to him about it NO!
i will never go back there FOR ANYTHING!!!!
i told the guy who ordered them from me they would be $3 EACH.....before i had em printed. figuring i would get them for somewhat less. i figured WRONG.i didnt loss anything on these, didnt make anything either.
deal done over with, lesson learned. now thats the whole story.

See... there was more to the story. What you had was the classic failure to communicate. I won't comment further.

Seriously, have fun with your new toy.
