It has been a nice day, just doing what I love to do. Jeanne is on vacation, so I slipped out of the house early and left her sleeping. This morning she called to wish me a happy birthday, and I played her the Beattles tune "Will You Still Love Me When I'm 64" over the phone.
Mike and I went to lunch together and had a nice, relaxing time. Just as we arrived back here at the studio a long time friend dropped by and brought me a present - Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture". We've been exchanging books for birthday gifts for over 30 years.
This morning I called a great young man that shares my birthday and wished him the best. He's only 25 and an engineer in Oklahoma. While he was in high school here he worked with me part time and was the finest employee I've ever had...with the exception of my son, Mike.
Later today, Jeanne will come over and we'll have a nice meal together and go to the movies to see "Fireproof".
Several have called with best wishes, along with cards received in the mail.
And as a highlight, I just got off the phone with Grandpa Dan. Life is good.
And so I'm working on #65 or whatever is left. Each day is a gift. The body is looking a little ragged, but inside I'm still about 16 and holding. Growing old is natural, maturing is an option.

Happy Birthday Raymond... still about 90 minutes left of it out this way. Very pleased to have met you again this year & I think you are as much an inspiration of how to remain enjoyably immature as you are in your excellent craftsmanship & sign business knowledge.

Happy birthday Raymond, I wonder if you realise how very tall you have become among us Letterheads. Some may call you short (like I am), but you stand head and shoulders above the crowd in talent and personality. Bill

I play golf regularly with a 74 year old retired architect, a 65 year old retired CEO and a 63 year old landscape architect (easing into retirement) . . . I make mental notes of everything they say because someday, I will be their age . . . God willing.
I do this so I can know what to expect before it happens. Mentors, they are . . . So while they are just shooting the breeze and talking about life, they unknowingly dispense advice and counsel to a younger man (OK - not THAT young at 49 - but still...) helping me navigate life a bit more securely.
Re-read your words, Ray. You will better understand the sincerity of my 'thank you' and best wishes for both a happy birthday - and a long and productive life.
Bill Riedel turned 84 this past winter. He went skiing that day . . . how's that for a lesson in living?
Sharing isn't confined to just Letterheads . . . and you don't even know that somebody is paying attention and taking notes. Thanks for today's lesson . . .
Today's other wise words:
How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday . . . you will have been all of these. (George Washington Carver)

Thanks all. It was a great day....and continues even after the "celebration".
Thanks for the nice words, Kellie. I had always seen Kellie as this very professional representative for Coastal Enterprises (Ka-Ching) and she does that very well, but at Dan's I saw her in a completely different light. She is a talented lady and extremely funny. And she was not immune from the practical jokes and ribbing either...both in receiving and giving.

BTW I used the long haired brush you gave me. I think you were right. It is better for pulling lines than lettering with.
Wishing you a great year Raymond,
