I have two 40 GB hard drives. My main C drive that has Windows 2000 Pro and all my programs is full.I am having all sorts of problems since this drive is so full...haven't been able to defrag for a while. I have a 126 GB external hard drive that has plenty of space on it. Can I move all my programs and operating system to the larger external drive without any major problems?
I know I need to buy a new computer or larger hard drive. With gas prices so high I just want a quick fix so I can continue to work.
Help!
Judy

Hi Judy! I would leave the operating system alone but I would transfer the files. If you are going to change any programs you need to uninstall them then reinstall them into the external drive.

I had the same problem several months ago, and got a 300 gig ext. drive. The 20 gig drive in my computer was getting full.

I moved all my job folders, graphics, downloaded fonts & clipart, to the new drive. Then got rid of the programs from the main drive that either weren't needed, or never got used. (Don't move the fonts that are in your windows font folder)

This freed up about 3 gigs of space, and unless I install more programs, etc.. this should last a while since all my new work is going on the external.

There is a bit of lag time when accessing jobs from the other drive, but only a few seconds.

I didn't move anything to do with the operating system, or any of the programs in use.
