Lately, I've been doing some experimenting with latex paints on different plastics. Has anyone painted out vinyl banners or coroplast with latex?
I've done a couple of sample pieces, and it seems to hold extremely well. I'm using exterior satin. It takes a day or two to really cure well, but I've got one sign on coroplast I did for a customer (on a trial basis) and I can't scratch it off, unless I really lean into it. Same for the banners. I even rolled up the banner for a day or so, and it didn't crack or peel off.
All I've done is wipe it down with Rapid Prep, scuff it with a scuff pad, and paint.. Have you tried it?

Hi Dale! We use Ronan Aquacote. It dries in about 10 minutes.

Yes, I have in the past used latex paint on banners and it held just fine. You might want to add some flow agent to help it lay better and it dries a little faster. I've used latex in the past on PVC panels for pastel looks on interior signs.

BTW...Simple green is the same as Rapid Prep and one bottle from Home depot will last forever. Just use the directions on the bottle. Save$$$

I know Aquacote works. I was trying not to have to buy a bunch of different stuff, and be able to use what I have on hand. I've been trying to go to latex wherever possible (though I'm still fighting it), and would like to be able to use the same materials for everything. So far, so good.

BTW, jack sold his portion of the rapid biz to someone else long before there were any other formulas built(Rapid Prep,Rapid clear, Rapid TacII, Rapid Remover) all created after jacks tenure.
So... how would Jack know anything about them?

Did I miss the signups for the rock throwing contest or what!! Thought this was simple post abotu latex paint and banners. good information on the banner stuff. I would have never thought it would stick.
When you say aquacote fades fast, what time frame are you talking?
I do know that in a pinch, Rapid Prep works as an excellent wasp killer, I hate those lil devils and when it is loaded in a squirt bottle, I nail them and they die fast.

I never knew it would stick either, Joe. I admit to finding it by accident, when I spilled a little on a banner a few months ago. I couldn't get it off!......which is a good thing.
I guess I'm going to have to put it to the real test. I've got a customer who is having me do a 4 by 20 foot banner for the upcoming state fair. It has an oddball off-yellow background, that I'm going to paint with exterior satin latex, then hand letter. Should be interesting....I hope no one is standing underneath it at the fair, if the paint peels off and falls on the ground.

Well, I did it. I had a can of Sherwin-Williams that I had left from another job, doctored it up to the right color, and painted out the banner. That was yesterday morning. This morning, I took my wife out to check it out. The paint was tight.....couldn't scratch it off. She kept saying "stop, you're going to mess it up."
So, we'll see. I'm going to start lettering it today. The fair starts next week. It only has to hold up for a couple weeks, but will be out in the wind and weather. I'm pretty confident it'll be allright though. That'll give me a good reason not to buy any more Tie-Cote and other vinyl primers. I'm pretty well satisfied at this point.

Pictures Dale, pictures man. I would think the rolling it up and storing it would be more of a concern then just it peeling off during the fair. But that would suck all on its own.
I am curious to see it when finished, please show some pictures.
(can you tell I would like to see some pictures!!)

Mark, everyones got an opinion, some folks base it on facts,some on feelings. You go ahead and use either method you wish, or check the facts,yer choice!
It would seem that someones very sorry for a decision they made back in 1989 and full of resentment, but that dosn't change any facts.

My discoveries about latex on banners and PVC panels. While painting backgrounds for my fine art projects I would use a piece of banner material in a large roller pan that I had cut to fit. I had several pieces that I could use over for this purpose. On small projects where I would use a 3" roller I would use a piece of PVC scrap just to keep a smooth consistancy. The latex held very well and I used it sometimes for a banner or PVC project. Do your own testing for reliability to suit your own needs.

Seems like I hear that from my kid or someone all the time when I'm trying to check something out like that, or when I keep adding too many things to a painting, etc . . . Don't they understand? I NEED to know if it CAN BE messed up . . . lol
Meanwhile, brethren (& sisteren) let us not forget 'Murphy's Law':
Have you ever noticed how, often, something you REALLY WANT latex to stick to will peel right off in whole 'sheets' immediatly upon drying, but something you NEED to get latex OFF of will invariabley still be sticking after a nuclear blowout?

The reason the paint you refer to as Latex sticks to vinyl, including banners is because most waterbased paints today are Acrylic, made with acrylic polymer base and this is plastic, which sticks to plastic (PVC) which is what vinyls are made from. Acrylic polymer is what all the vinyl primers like Tie Coat are made from.

By the way, the reasons we use Ronan Aqua Cote is that it is tougher than typical house paints, comes in the same pallette as One Shot, and vinyl sticks to it like no body's business. Most house paints don't accept vinyl very well.
When I open a can of Aqua Cote, I dab a little color on the bare metal lid for identification, and everyone can't believe how tough it is when it dries.
I would still use house colors for painting monument sign structures and the like, but Mack Brush makes some dynomite lettering brushes for waterbase paints.
