I don't know if this has been discussed before but has anybody heard that there is a ban of oil based paints and varnish by the year 2010? I sure hope not. I was told this tonight. If so, what will One Shot do?

Yes folks- its coming.. we have had a range of 2010 compliant solvent based paints here for a while now, and to fair they are pretty comparable..
From what I read in the UK trade press- they ban won't extend to all coatings, and some exceptions will be made for specialist ( lets hope we all fall into this one)paints.. It would be intersting to see what One Shot have to say on this thou..

Do we have a voice in all this bureaucracy? Are there any sign-related organizations that can lobby for the rights of us who use this miniscule amount of paint? Is the International Sign Association, or another like it, involved?
I still have yet, after 37 or so years in the trade, to witness a child eating a sign......

If that happens, I could see the future. It's a dark night, a guy pulls up in a 1975 Coupe De Ville. He opens the trunk. We hagger over price. He hands me some oil based lettering enamels and some real fur quills. I look around, and slowly go back to my truck and drive off into the night.

Hiya Tony, This conversation originally surfaced back in September of 2004... http://www.letterville.com/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/1/31146.html? and when it took effect depended on your locale. It was Jan. of '05 here in the northeast. Supposedly, there are some exceptions to the rules, but I can not find them.

I been stocking up on oil based leaded enamels for a few years now because that/s the stuff we all miss. When was the last time any of you made an attempt to do something like this. Storage isn't a problem and paint lasts for years stored properly. Most all the paint I have is lead based from 1-Shot and Chromatic from retired sign painters and although some have skins, some careful planning and new empty cans, caps and some Paint-Sav can extend its life into the future. I guess just being a pinstriper does have its rewards as a little goes a long way.

I bought $800 worth on 1-Shot a few years ago... but not because I thought they would quit making it... more because my local supplier was closing their doors & I talked them into a 25% discount. Nobody on the island sells it anymore.

All I have is 2 quarts of the Old Formula LeFranc Lead based Size.. I still chuckle when I look at it and the Scull and crossbones are larger then the logo.
