The October edition of the Router Magic Workshop here in Yarrow is getting more magical every day as more and more creative folks sign up. Its going to be a creative and energized three days to be sure!
The latest person to sign up is Noella Cotnam, from Cornwall, Ontario, one of the most creative people I know. I have long admired her work. A visit to her shop is like a trip to Disneyland! Wall to wall eye candy!
Here's the name plaque we created for her... Noella carves the most beautiful birds and so her name plate had to include a birdhouse. The 'Home Tweet Home' is my way of saying congratulations on her new beautiful studio/workspace. The mailbox with the flag up symbolizes her friends near and far who love to communicate with her. You got mail!
To have Noella attend our workshop is truly an honor. I have no doubt she will add much to the discussions and happily share her extensive knowlege through the workshop. I LOVE IT!
The list of attendees I can now announce includes, Duncan Wilkie, Bob Kaschak, Raymond Chapman and Noella plus our regular crew here- imagine the creative energy that will be floating around for three plus days in tiny little Yarrow!!! There's more names to come soon but there are also a few seats available for those who wish to join us.
Counting the days to creative FUN in Yarrow...

All right Noella. 2 Sabres vs. 1 Shopbot and 1 Multicam. Bob will be assimilated. It'll be great to see you again Noella. Man Dan, I can't help to think our descendants will someday be featured on Antiques Roadshow (2080 version). "Grampa MultiDan was a ground breaking artist, we believe this piece was created just after the turn of the century possibly around 2010. The fact that you have this letter from your Great Grandfather, who personally new the artist is wonderful. Otherwise, the "Signdog" sticker on the base may have seriously lowered the value. I've talked to some of my colleagues and we've estimated a value for insurance at ¥500,000,000."

Each workshop takes on a life of its own, shaped largely by the folks who attend. Shane knows this all too well.
This will be our fifth workshop and each one has been vastly different. We try and cover much of the same material each time (with improvements and additions), and yet each workshop is such a varied experience for those who attend as well as for us here who host it.
Some of the workshops were low key, where everyone simply sat quietly and listened to me and the EnRoute teacher speak. There were few questions. The demos and hands-on portion went quickly with few questions. The students did the hands-on portion but didn't experiment nor make discoveries beyond what we showed them. Teaching these workshops was dead easy for I merely kept to the script. And yet in other ways it was a hard challenge. I like a reaction to what I say so I know I'm reaching people. There was no struggle to keep things relatively on track. Lack of interuptions and questions meant I actually had to work harder to fill the time we had allowed. Our days were relatively short in comparison to the long, long hours of some other workshops. The pace was leisurely. We taught what we set out to teach, and each student went away happy, but somehow the workshop was not what I had hoped it to be.
Then there were the more rambunctious and high energy workshops. Tons of questions and participation by those in attendance. Lots of passionate debate about the best way to do things. There was plenty of joking and lots of good natured challenges. The race to learn was on!!! At these workshops folks came early and left late (reluctantly) for they were eager to learn and make the best of their time in our shop. At the end of these weekends I had lost my voice and was exhausted. So too were all who attended. But what an experience!
Plenty of laughs, high energy, lots of challenges, a group that is virtually impossible to control (in a good way) is what I love. While we certainly have a prepared script, and an adjenda we don't absolutely have to go there the whole time. We will shape the program to suit those who attend. This is where I thrive and I believe creativity and learning live at their very best.
The group assembled so far for the next workshop are all accomplished, experienced professionals. It looks to be the highest energy group assembled to date...
All are confident in what they know and do, yet are wildly passionate to learn more, to open their minds to new ways of doing things. It may be seemingly deep water for anyone else who wants to attend this workshop. Rather than being intimidated I see an absolutely awesome opportunity to learn from some of the very best in the industry!
I am excited... for this will be an experience like non other to date in Yarrow!

In reviewing this post I took another look at the picture of Noella's name plaque and noticed that I had somehow put three 'E's in tweet. AMAZING. for I created the file, watched it route, carefully carved detail and sanded it, put on mutlple coats of paint and glazes, assembled it, photographed it, and tweaked the photo... only to see the spelling mistake this morning... EEEEK!
But in retrospect I like it. It is a collector's item I guess.
Far from perfect in Yarrow...

It will be great to see Dan, Duncan and Noella again, and I have long wanted to meet Raymond, a man whose work, and view of life I have admired since I first started doing signs.
Donna is someone I have long wanted to meet. A person that I'm sure will be just as wonderful, as her words in her posts.
I also look forward to meeting those in Dan's life and his crew he so eagerly speaks of.
The plaques are mind boggling to say the least.
This is gonna be so good.
Peace, Bob

The workshops where you know the individuals moreso tend to be more personable and a whole ton of fun! Get ready to have your sides hurting from laffin' too much...
Dan, I like the extra E and thought it was intentional. You do good when you goof up too!

I'm coming to sign the wall and meet Donna (well, everyone else, too). And Dan will show up, too?....well, that's just an added bonus.
It will be interesting to hear what Sowhatshisname has to say after this group leaves. This bunch has been around for awhile, so they know all the "tricks" (and not just sign tricks). Better be on your toes, Gramps.
