Hi everyone,
I have a problem printing to my edge that is about to drive me insane (that is if I don't throw the machine through the window first).

Very often, when I send a multi-color job to the edge it stops printing halfway through the first color or after it prints one or two panels of a multi panel job. Today I wasted more time and material then I care to admit.

The temp spool files for each color foil are still sitting in the Q-Manager. They don't appear to be completely sent to the printer.

Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks, Louie

I'm not sure if it's a related problem, but our Edge will stall in mid-job sometimes if it has an problem with the network. Kissy is the one I would ask. She seems to be a pro at the Edge.

I'd check the cabling?

Louie,

As Graham suggest, check the cable. I'd recommend getting a new one and trying that.

I had a similar situation several years ago. I was using a 25' cable at the time. I switched to a 12' cable and the problem went away.

The only thing I can think of is that the data was becoming corrupted when it reached the Edge.

It's not the data being corrupted or the cables.
Happened to us all the time, but we didn't loose the job though...
It is the temp/spool files.

Go in and click "resume" or "restart" DONT CLOSE THE SPOOLER or the files.

Haven't used my Edge in years, but I do sort of remember how to fix it..try that and let us know...

Are you using a USB or LPT dongle?

Is the edge on an LPT port or a USB port?

We are using a USB dongle and a LPT port. I have tried resume and restart but that doesn't do anything.

Mine did that and I solved it for under $5 and took less than 15 minutes. Open the cover to your Edge and look in the back to the right. See the silver cable? Check it; it's broke. Go down to your local auto parts place and get a new one; they have them. Easy fix.

Ricky,
Are you talking about the silver braided ground cable under the top cover?

Here's where I'm at now.

I replaced the parallel cable and checked the braided ground cable, that seems good. I did hook up another ground strap just in case.

What is happening is the temp spool files for a four color print stack up in the Que. When I hit the online button the first time, the vinyl spool file disappears. When I hit the online button for the process yellow the yellow spool file is gone. When it asks for the magenta I hit the online button again and the magenta spool file stays in the Que. It prints a few inches of the magenta file then that is where it locks up.

Dang... Mine was printing the first color of a 4 color process job, then coming back to the home position and ...that's it, no more nothing. A Goober tech told me to check the braided cable and I did; at first it didn't appear broken but when I gave it a tug, it was indeed broken. I was hoping it would be the same problem with yours Louie, since it was so easy, quick and cheap to fix.

If it's stopping in the same place each time, I would start suspecting software more than hardware, especially if you try sending different files and it stops in the same place each time.

Single color jobs with a UV coat go through with no problems. It seems like the buffer is not taking the big files. Is there any way to adjust or even read the buffer size?

Oookay.... try this.....]

1) Delete files in the SEPPATH directory.
2) Delete .TMP files in the QUEUE directory.
3) Delete .TMP files in the TEMP directory.
4) Run SCANDISK.
5) Run DEFRAG.

After rebooting, try printing the Edge file again and see what happens.

Hi Louie

We used to have a edge it worked alright, but at the same time we bought it another signy got one too. He
had exactly the same problems you're having & i think he landed in court arguing this fact was a design or software fault. He too went through hundreds of dollars worth of media let alone
work down time. I'm not sure the outcome but i feel for you.

As a last resort:
Try uninstalling your desk printer software. I once had a stalling problem caused by the hp software polling the lpt port.

I still am not up and running. I have tried every suggestion above and what seems like a hundred more. I have a friend with Omega on his laptop with a parallel port. He's coming in Monday and we'll see if it's the computer or the Edge.

This morning I was cutting a job in a gold foil and my HS-15 plotter jammed. Usually you turn it of and back on and it resets. Not this time. The plotter kept slamming to the top of the y axis when I turned it on and would not reset as usual. Luckily I had a spare and plugged it in and went back to work.

It's been a week from hell. Monday is another day.

I had a similar problem with my Roland PC 60. After many, many hours we eliminated everything from software to cables. Everyone was stumped. Off to the authorized Roland shop. The motor the drives the advance roll was sticking at various points, sometimes. Don't know if it's related. Just another place to look.

Tony Teveris (sp?) is a senior software developer at Gerber, who had a great deal of involvement in writing code for the last several versions of Omega. He is also a very helpful individual who visits www.4edgetalk.com quite a bit, and may be able to offer more help if he hears about your situation. He also pops in to signs101.com from time to time. Even doing a search on either site should easily track back to some of his posts, and he might have provided an email addy you can use to ask him about this, or send a link to this conversation.
