A while back I posted a question on color choice and got some great help from Bill, Glen, Frank, Deri and especially Rapid and Jill.....Thanks All!! Here's the finished piece and a step by step slide show on the oval section (the question I posted was about color choices on the oval).

Your amaze me! It's not just the tallent and skill with carving tools, there's the knowledge of where to use masks and other techniques.
So what the finish clear coat?

This a good example from my "Cookie Cutter" seris. No square inside corners and the radiusesses can't be any smaller than the wheel on my edge sander and of course my typestyle of choice, Century Schoolbook.
I always admired the faux wood finish techniques but since I don't know how to do em I have to stick to the real thing. lol Colored stains en me go a long way back. Why not blue wood??? Joe, the clear is Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane....5 coats. As everyone knows, no clear will hold up for very long outdoors so the customer has to commit to frequent "Refreshing" of THEIR sign. I am very clear about this right from the beginning. The various "Trick Paint" and masking techniques I learned at letterhead meets from the vehicle guys. It was easy to roll em over to add the carving. I've been using them on Letterhead projects for quite a while.....this is my first paying job tho.

Ian, The dark gray is the primer, which I tint with TintsAll black. When you pre-finish, mask and carve, the newly exposed material has to be primed and cleared. If the primer was white, it would show as a very fine white line around the letters or image.......tinting it black solves that visual problem. The clear I use is 1Shot Speed Dry UV Clear (That's whats in the jar). It dries very quickly and is quite glossy. (I always seem to be in a hurry ) The outgassing from it also helps to give me a consistant dry time for the size......also cause I'm in a hurry....lol

Been away helping me bro put up siding on a 2 story house...checked in this AM to find this...Great job Joe...Love the stained look but, (I'm on dial up, so watching any u-tube type stuff is out of the question, just takes to long to down load)so back to the question, how does the stain hold up to fading?...Nice work.

A couple of years back Minwax doubled their UV blockers. Even with the old formula, if the finish is "refreshed" when needed there is no fading. Dave Grundy has had a sample of mine (burgundy) for about 3 years....he says it still looks great.
I just spoke to someone yesterday that has one of my signs from 20 years ago....it's "refreshed" regularly and they said it still looks new.

The door piece you gave to me has no meaning to the new owner of the property but he is unwilling to let me remove it from "his" new shop!!!
edited to say that it still looked good in June. I think that it has been out in the weather for at least 3 years? Facing the north west wind and weather of this area of Ontario. A pretty magnificent feat.
