for the past month I have noticed my silicone is not drying. I could stick lettering up on day and come back the next and peel of tape. but lately 2 days later the damn silicone is still tacky and nasty
I ever checked to make sure I didnt buy a new brand or if the company has "changed their formula". I use and always have used GE silicone from lowes or home depot. i hope to god silicone is not about to go thru the change one shot did and turn out to be crap.
am i the only one thats noticed this?

Yep, I had a similar problem earlier this year. The letters I installed did fine as I used the first half of the tube. But, the stuff in the second half would never dry.
I had to go back and buy another tube to finish the project.

Have you considered using double sided VHB tape in conjunction with the silicone? The VHB can completely replace silicone and it has a long outdoor life too, but silicone can be added assurance for bonding to rough surfaces like plaster or stucco.

Sometimes I drive past the giant GE Silicones plant a few miles north of Albany. They sold it a coupla years ago and the new name on the plant is "Momentive." I just checked out gesilicone.com and the site says Momentive all over it.
The local business review says "The silicone products plant in Waterford, N.Y., is now officially part of Momentive Performance Materials Inc., a new company formalized on Dec. 3 with the sale of GE Advanced Materials, GE Bayer Silicones, and GE Toshiba Silicones. The acquisition by Apollo Management LP was completed for $3.8 billion."
There are 3 other GE silicone plants (W. Virginia, Ontario and Texas) so is the defective stuff coming from one, some or all of 'em?
I thought the ownership change might be a good thing because the plant hasn't had any newsworthy chemical spills lately. On the other hand Momentive's logo really sucks.

I'm thinking the changes we see in many of our products are the result of new Government environmental standards. It's gotta be tough to maintain the same quality when the essential components are banned. It's gotta be tough to be in the paint business these days.

Thanks everyone for the heads up on the GE product.
Here's my thoughts. Silicone 1 & 2 are side by side and completely different. #2 never gets hard and easily peals off of everyting. Is this the product everyone is having trouble with?
So far I've found #1 to work well. Gosh, I hope I'm correct on this. I can't imagine not having this fine quality products on my shelf.
Why in the hell does everyting have to keep changing? Dang it, next they'll tell us were out of gas, milk or something like that.

I have used GE silicone 1 for many years with good results, but beware of 2 because it is one weird varmint, have no idea what it is for because it does not cure right or have any adhesive power. I am not aware of any formula changes to 1 at this point, but I would not be surprised. If indeed it has been sold it never ceases to amaze me that companys change a successful product into something disfunctional. And on another subject-what has happened to Jeff Lang and to Letterhead Magazine? Peace, Gary

I have noticed this with a lot of things. I wanted to get rid of some rust, so I bought some "rust remover". I can't remember the brand - could be CLR. The instructions led me to believe this stuff was really potent, so I treated it like weapons-grade plutonium. With thickly-gloved hands I applied the mystery compound to the metal. I left it on for the time specified in the instructions. The rust was barely touched. I put more on and waited longer. Still nothing much happened. Put more on and waited even longer. By the time I was done, I was handling the goop-coated piece of metal with my bare hands and scrubbing it with a scotchbrite. I'm not sure what they put in that stuff, but the rust had nothing to worry about. I decided to get serious and found some muriatic acid. The rust was gone in a jiffy.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

well i found the latest receipt and was able to return 8 tubes (which were doubled up in packaging) back to home home depot. the little girl did not mark return on my receipt so I will dump the other 4 on them today and get rid of all them bad tubes. I will call GE and ask them whats up.
Im sure we will go thru the typical:
nothing has changed
do you know how to use our product
we dont what your talking about
we have not been bought out
and the most infamous "YOUR THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS REPORTED ANY PROBLEMS ACROSS THE WHOLE WORLD!
heard all that crap before. just like one shot. just like the milwaukee 18 volt batteries. yep been there and heard that.

Haven't used silicone in two years! I stay away from the stuff like it is Avery!
Tape or a real adhesive is my choice.

I called and person answering phones didnt understand who I needed to talk to. Her response was "where did you buy the product?" I responded, "what did it matter put sales on the phone"
Im not about to go round and round with minumum wage phone girl. I left message for sales guy and no reply so far i will call back today. I did receive an email from a letterhead member that said he got $150 back from GE over this problem, which I have my doubts about getting any moneys from them
