I have an HP Designjet 54" wide printer and this has a built-in RIP to the best of my knowledge. Still a small 109k Corel file will print about 75% then print huge areas of black. It seems like the system has run out of memory though with 1GB of ram and such a small file I find this perplexing. I have tried converting the art to a GIF, JPG. Same result only later in the print which means I have wasted a load of ink ($200.00 per color) and material. Also the resolution is terrible with GIFS and JPG files where with the print from Corel the fonts are crisp. I had to refer a customer to Kinko's! I'd appreciate any guiding light here.

Hiya Randall,
What version of Corel?
Is there anything special about the file, special effects, shadows, etc?
What are the file dimensions?
What kind of computer are you printing from - operating system, ram, free space on hard drive(s), etc.?
Are you printing right to the printer or is it networked?
When you exported to a bitmap, at what resolution did you export it?
Just about anything can and will go wrong when producing digital prints. It could be software related, like a corrupted font or an unusual occurance with a special effect, which would be a simple fix. Or, it could be hardware related, and there are many things that can go wrong here. Sometimes bad file information can hang up the computer or rip, a cable can go bad or network connection settings could change.
I would assume that you tried the micro$oft standard answer of rebooting everything. If that didn't help, the next step would be to try to print something else or a smaller version of the file. From there, you can go in many directions.
Anyway, HP's that have the built in RIP should have "PS" after their model number.

Havin' fun,

Checkers
