Let's have some FUN! Donna started this a few years ago, I revived it in 2007 and it was fun....She "borrowed" this game from another board, and thought she would start it here!! The concept is to play the nosey neighbor, or sign competitor, or what have you. Each person answers the question the poster above them asked and asks (and may answer) their own question.
We met Hulseys at the Durhams' last weekend....oh the stories I could tell!! Who are the last letterheads you spent time with?

I just had the lil gal who bought Mike Jackson's sign company stop by yesterday. She is opening up a new sign shop in Pittsburgh! Seems like a nice person, too.
What is the one rule which pops into your head whenever you start to design a sign? Love....Jill

CRAZY busy!! I'm taking a break over lunch to check here but I haven't had time to get on letterville lately, that's how busy WE'Ve been!
What's the longest turnaround time you've ever had on a sign...from order date to delivery?

5 months. Due to county/municipality regs and lack of understanding their own codes. Never did get a permit, just figured after 5 months of not getting a straight answer from the 'powers that be' we get to put it up by default. That should be the rule anyway.
Edited to add the question. (Sorry Jane, I'm slow)

---------------------------- Chapter 10 ---------------------------- As Bruce sat with his head in his hands, he thought to himself, "I'm just a hapless loser... how can I go on? I think I'll just quit." Life seemed like it was almost not worth living.
Just then Dana came around the corner, and he knew she would have the right things to say. No matter how low his spirits seemed to get, Dana could always cheer him up with those magic words, "Wanna go get some Chinese?"
"Of course!" he replied, feeling better already. ----------------------------
Well.. sorry, Bruce... I'm not a writer, can't do the whole chapter. I would like a copy of the book...

Two weeks ago we cut 32 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of vinyl with about 400 small circles and squares in each one. Bill came to over $1200. We had less than $50 in material, 1 hour to design the pattern and about 6 hours cutting time. No weeding or taping. Pretty good margin!
Why did you get into the sign business?

I quit doing tattoos and started doing window splashes. One day one of my window splash customers asked me "can you do banners?" so I said, yeah and went and figured out how to do a banner. It just snowballed from there.
my question is...how much do you charge for a sign??
heh-heh...and how many people a week ask you that?

Worst for me was the hardest job I've had to do. I was honored to be asked and yet it was the most emotional job I could imagine... letter my stepson's best friend's casket. What should have taken 1 hour took 4 & 1/2 a box of tissues.
Do you remember the first customer you fired?

Oh yeah. He constantly complained about my prices yet he kept coming back. One time he yelled at me and I showed him the door during mid conversation and told him I wasn't interested in his biz any longer. He was STUNNED (total loss for words) that I wouldn't take his amazing money.

Donna ... not sure what you mean by "hired" but I remember the very first Customer I established a contra relationship with.
Just starting off in Toowoomba I needed a banner. Found a Canvas company who were also just getting started. They made it for me. I made them some signs.
25 years later they are a multi million dollar company, still make my banners overnight and I still do all their signwriting on vehicles etc. Not only that they offer a lot of their products, display tents etc, with my signwriting on them as a service to their customers. I don't have to quote. Done so many they know what each piece is worth.
The biggest job in all those years was a $60,000 contract to paint (in ink) logos on 400 railway tarpaulins.
What a customer!
Not only that, from the boss to the guys on the shop floor, they are first name friends.
Who is YOUR best customer?

Bill is going fishing with 3 other guys today through Monday night. (he DESERVES a break!) I'm sure there will be some Tim Allen hooting going on! And I will probably sew and do watercolors. I will miss him though.
What sign project have you done that made you proud of yourself?

Jon - the vans I'm currently doing. I did the logo awhile back but the customer 'demanded' too much info on them. Makes me sad to smack all that info on when it rubs me the wrong way.
I'm reluctant to spend money, even on things I need. It provides security for me to be there and many times I simply choose to go without in order to maintain that security. This is NOT helping with my reno project! LOL Are you a spender or a saver?
