Kinda watching the game, I noticed the new lettering on the basketball court. It read "The Finals" Well of course, that's new. Do you think it was done in vinyl or sprayed with a fast drying lacquer, because you know it's just a temporary sign.

Not Vinyl. I have lettered lots of gym floors and the vinyl will not holp up under the friction of the sneakers. Doesn't matter how many coats of clear on top.

They can't be pernament, because don't they have to be removed right after the finals?

Never use vinyl on a gym floor even just for one game. It's just asking for law suits!!!!
No way will it take 200lb players with size 12 sneakers at full speed, stopping and rotating on the spot.
I have seen a printed panel at a game once, but have no idea how they sealed the edges or how long it lasted.
The only "temporary" sign I did for the local stadium was painted in enamels with the approved clear floor sealer over the top.
When it was needed to be replaced ... out with a belt sander, undercoat, repaint white panel background and put another sign there. PITA time consuming. Especially fitting drying times around practice games, training etc mid season.
They covered the cost with the new sponsors advert.

Most of those courts are portable floors made up of 4x8 panels. They can take the few panels they need for the temporary graphics and paint the logo right on top of the finish coat, give it one fresh top coat of urethane, then take that panel and just screen off the new graphic and give it one fresh top coat when the event is finished. Those courts are refinished at least every other year anyway.

I have done piles of gyms and courts, I have tried printed vinyls that could be urethaned over with limited success. It can work for a one time event but will not last out the year. For us we paint or screen the graphics on the floor and apply the urethane overtop. ther are some great water born products that do comply with slip test that are used for NBA courts today. These products are a snap to use and cure quickly.

They are slippery and open you up to trouble.
