What kind of paint would you recommend for lettering on an interior wall that has flat latex paint on it. They want the lettering to have a flat finish as well.

Try Rosco Off Broadway paints. They are mostly marketed for Scenic painting, but they are excellent for what you are trying to accomplish, as they have great coverage and dry flat. (And, they're water-based) My favorite supplier is www.barbizonlighting.com Or, you could go to www.rosco.com and find a supplier.

The lettering on the wall behind him was done with One Shot.

Wow Kim, Great picture of Al! When was it taken? I'd like to interview you and hear about him next time I see you.
Interior wall painting - Regular One Shot works well with flattening paste but it needs more than one coat because the paste thins out the paint pretty extremely, which means you might as well use interior house paint in flat latex. For black, Chromatic matte bulletin is excellent. Poster colors are great but sometimes need more than one coat also, and don't last very well in the can. They dry up similar to Japan color which would be a traditional way of doing it.

Steve, Hopefully, I'll see you in September. Same place, same time as usual. ;-)
The photo was taken for a newspaper article back in 1996. The wall in the photo is in his dining room. Of course, the people who bought the house after he died painted over it with some revolting scarlet colored paint. Oh well...everything must change, right? I have the pics.
Here's a link to his webpage. It's on the site of an old friend of his but that whole page is his stuff. http://www.sfpnn.com/al_zanetti.htm
