Just got back from a Career Day demonstration at Justis' school. Talked to 24 6th graders about the joys of sign making. I didn't have as much time as I wanted or I would have given them supplies and broke out the 1-Shot. Instead, I took in several panels, from friends as well as myself, featuring different techniques. I took in a pinstriped bowling pin and lots of design books, as well as my community awards. I painted a quick panel with the teacher's name on it. I told the kids that while it does help to be artistic, that you can learn layout and design and start making signs with a computer. But I also told them that a painted sign is truly unique and special...and fun to make. I told them that if they take pride in their work and do things the right way, that sign making can be a satisfying career. They all got a "Go Pens!" decal to take home, and I passed out bizcards and also patent leaf pages with bits of leftover gold on them. Those were a big hit. They all recognised my work in the portfolio I passed around. All of them knew about the Letterheads meet in Mars. I think Justis gained a new respect from his peers because of my "cool" job. And I think I opened quite a few eyes to the signs around us all. Love....Jill

Good Job Jill, I'm sure that at least one of those kids will become a little more "artistic" because of your charisma. Nobody ever tells "future adults" that it is OK to do what you LIKE to do instead of what will make you big bucks. They get too many mixed signals from our Capitalist Society. You Rock!

That sounds great. I did a career day talk on signs, about 6 years ago. I had a lot of fun, and I think everyone thought it looked like the cool job that it is!
