I got a call tonight about a coro jobsite sign. I am farely new to signs and was wondering do you always use a border or is it sometimes not needed? Thanks in advance.

Whatever you like.

Sometimes I do them half-positive & half-negative, and you get a pseudo border where the coloured background goes close to the edge, but I'll always leave a gap at the edge.

If it's only corro- don't worry too much about something like that if it's meant to be cheap. If you're being paid a lot, then maybe you can spare them a few minutes to do one.

Is it just ONE sign?

Up to three now with possibley more to come. I know a little about the negative space(have read Mastering Layout). But still to me reading and doing are two different things. Sigh... maybe time for another meet.

Darcy,
Either way is fine depending on your layout or spacing, but I personally like to see some type of border. I feel it just finishes it, like a frame on a picture. It gives it boundaries.
Just my opinion...Nice to see you here.

The few minutes it takes to put a border on, especially one with round or convex corners, is a "finishing touch" to a plain sign.

I have set up a cutting progam to cut pinstripes and corner curves out of "scrap" vinyl. Cutting a big job with waste on the edges.

It's only a matter of setting the cap size on the progam for the width of the stripe wanted and stretching it to the length of the waste.

It cuts 10 stripes at a time with matching curves (1/4 circle) for the corners.

Think about it ... easy to set up!

I don't do borders on coros.
Two reasons:
[Smile] I have a 4B and it only cuts to 13", so it's a waste of materials.
[Smile] People complain that that size sign costs $25 (too much to them!) so I just stick 'em and go.
But I do use them on bigger signs.
I like the look of a border and think it "finishes" things.
Love....Jill

Darcy, I like to use borders as well based on our layouts. For the quicky sticky get it out the door, we too sometimes cut the borders stripes from scraps but mostly we use automotive pin striping tape. It come in different widths and is fast and easy to apply to those rectangular get them out the door quick signs.

Hi Darcy, good to see you're still doing signs!

Personally, I hardly ever put borders on Coro signs, more often on MDO signs (mostly just an inline)and always on sandbasted signs(to the edge).

Have fun with it.

[Smile]

Edited to add: borders(to the edge or not) draw attention to the shape of the sign, so they seem to be most suited for signs shaped other than rectangular or square, or when you want to set the sign apart from the background, like in case of a white sign on a light gray building.
