I recently purchased a new Epson printer for my shop computer,and cant get the dang thing to work. Dont think it is anything related to the printer itself, but maybe the USB. Whenever I bootup the computer and then turn on the printer, my computer slows down to a crawl, and it shows in the performance bar that the cpu is running at 100%. Ive added a pci usb in case that was it, but it still wont work. Someone told me that my bios might need upgrading to accept the newer type printers. Anyone have any ideas?

did u plug in the printer before installing the driver? In any case. Goto the control panel and remove the printer. Then reinstall the driver. then plug in the usb cord.

I don't know anywhere nearly as much as Curtis, but I agree: some systems now do all sorts of hard-to-remedy things if you plug-in the peripheral device before installing its driver.

Look at your 'power source' and is it enough to handle all the USB plugs. You may need to upgrade the 'power pack' to allow the system to run clean and fast.
I had to step up from a 400 to a 600 watt system to operate all 10 USB ports.
Remember they are pulling the power from the tower!

I installed the software as it instructed, plugging in the usb when asked. Funny thing is, it worked then, but when I rebooted, it wont. Tried all my usb ports, but soon as I plug it in, it causes the system to hang, and on the performance tab,100% of the cpu is being used. The power thing might be a possibility, Ill check into it, but any other ideas, let me know. This has me bamfoozled.

I tried unplugging the other USB devices I have, and then rebooting with just the new printer hooked up, but it wont boot with it plugged in. The power supply is 300w.

might be youre computer is USB 1.0 and the printer is USB 2.0....check with the motherboard manafacture...

Does the printer show System Requirements anywhere on the box or in manual? Got a new printer a few years ago & would not work unless processor was over a certain speed. Reluctantly moved to a newer computer just so I could use the printer. Old one was more reliable - but too slow.

This is very true as well. I didn't think about a USB 2.0 plug. But it will draw more power.
300 watts where used in the old Pentium 2 systems.
As I stated to John I run 10 USB ports and a CF/SD/MDD hub. 2 scanners 2 printers 2 monitors 1 Bamboo Tablet 1 wireless keypad with mouse 2 USB 4 Gig sticks Plus I plug in 2 Digital Cameras for downloading images
I am about to add a additional 6 USB hub.
I will have to add a second fan as well and up the power source again. I run on a Dual Core now. But I am thinking about a Quad Core.

Theres one more thing I am going to check today. Through some surfing, found out that the newer computers use dot4 on the usb ports. If your computer does not have dot4 printing support, they wont work unless you set them up to. I found this out last night, so Im gonna check it out when I get to the shop. Ill let you know. And my computer does have 2.0 usb. All the drivers are up to date.
