I just want to tell all of you that have taken the time in correspondence, “Thank You!” It’s been a massive help and I’m seeing all of this positive energy helping me out in my own professional career. It’s giving me a better outlook on how I approach my own art and the way I’m teaching it to the kids, (10th – 12th grade). I’m finding I’m spending more time individually with them and helping them with more in-depth demonstration. I think we all get in a funk from time to time and I have to say I’m so glad I found this website. Every one of you is so eager to help and I love the way people post ideas and sign designs so that this entire community can help each other. I’m jealous of you all and at the same time, I thank you for the artistic “spark” to refocus, rejuvenate and recharge the batteries.
That being said, my question for today is two-fold. First, I see some of you putting links on the board to YouTube and it got me wondering if there are any video tutorials that would visually explain the processes that are mentioned in the posts. Seeing as I am just starting, I’m looking for the preparation of the substrate…sealing, sanding, priming, etc. I would also like to see the process of pouncing if at all possible. I would love to make one of these Letterhead Meets, but unfortunately between school, coaching (high school baseball) and starting to bid houses for some summer painting work, I’m completely swamped. Any direction would be appreciated.
On a side note, I was wondering how many of you pursue your art careers outside of sign making/painting. I majored in Animation/Illustration so I do a lot of caricatures and cartooning, my seniors do a mural every year here at the school so we dabble with that, I love drawing (mostly realism), and still do quite a bit of traditional painting.
p.s. I’m in the process of getting my picture up here on the board; I’ve just got to get a copy of the flyer that’s hanging in the Post Office!
Have a good one…Jeff

I think if you type in "Hand Lettering or "Sign Painting" on YOU TUBE you'll see some actual work being done, even our own Pierre Tardif from Key-Bec Canananananada has a video i do beleive..
I think there are some folks here that dabble in some other forms of art as well....it depends on what kind of output their shop is at, high volume, age, years in business.
SOme are retired or almost there, and they are turning more towards the fine art ascept, some are strictly sign shop business owners and they are not the reall hands on art types. It's very hard to classify what a sign maker is today with all the avenues that one can go down.
In the past it was more defined, with the only exception being one sign painter did a little more of the specialty work, (Gold Leaf, Illustrations, airbrush, spraying faces cutting rubylith, etc.) SOme even bent neon, operate boom trucks, cranes etc. SO you can see the sign maker still has to wear many hats. (Bookeeper, janitor, Public Relations, volunteer, coach....often times it's to drum up business to be in the public eye.) I was Jaycee President for a year, and involved with many Jaycee functions which propelled me to more and more work, when other people go to know who I was, and what I did.
SO how are we coming along with the Irish Festial 4 X 8's???

Lets go Mike, im all warmed up from diggin hole number 32, and I havent even left the house yet today.
Hey Mark, you know I made a similar drawing for a local guy here in town that wanted to know how to mount a three pole double sided sign. My first advice was to have him pay me to make it. Once I realized he didnt like my humor, three little circles and a small lesson fee was all she took.
Friends for life I tell ya, friends for life.

Hey Jeff! I wish you had been my high school art teacher! I'm one of the Letterheads who has crossed over into the Muralist field...but heading in the direction of fine art. I absolutely love portraiture. Larry Ware also teaches art, I believe. I think he's in the D.C. area now, by way of Savannah, GA...last I heard.

The Irish Festival signs are stalling for right now…the client is unusually picky considering the fact that they have no idea what the hell they want. I mentioned to them a vinyl banner because Jill suggested it to me here on the board…they liked that idea a lot, as is cuts down on cost also. I’m wondering, is there any trick to painting on a 4’x 8’ banner?
I was also touring through your website Mike and I’ve got to say that’s some pretty amazing stuff! I’ve noticed through my experiences with some artists that they tend to pigeon-hole themselves into a very structured, methodical technique, process and outcome…I loathe this in my own art so I try and branch out and become more educated... but your designs are all over the board. I really respect that as a fellow artist. You have a mastery of many different looks and designs…you da man!
I’m loving the exploring and clicking on all of the hyperlinks, I’m trying to get to everyone’s and really soak up this stuff.
Hope you guys are having a good one…I’m looking forward to the Holiday weekend!
