What's up with that? I get stuff like that too. How do they exactly plan on scamming people like this? It's not like 50 fellowship to the lord banners are a hot item in the streets. How does this work

I got one the other day. I replied the banners are a million dollars each and we'd get started as soon as he sent me the funds via Western Union. I haven't heard back from him. Go figure.

Simple. You make the product, charge it against his credit card, you ship (because he's going to change his mind once they're done), the credit card of that type comes back a full two weeks later as invalid. Its going to be a CC on a Nigerian, Belgian or French bank, not a Visa type card. I've been a Nigerian Scammer player for 7 years now. I currently have only one ongoing.

Dawud, it's a variant of the Nigerian 419 scam. They will give you a credit card number or cashier's check that will be initially be good and cover the purchase. But notice he says he will pick up the banners... At some point he will change it to needing them shipped, but he will say to just add that money in with the amount you are charging on the card, then wire the shipping amount to 'XXXXX Shipping Co.' which happens to be just a sham company.
A few days after the check or credit card has cleared, it is discovered that it was stolen, and the money is reversed out of your account, however, the money you sent via the wire is gone, baby, gone.
When I worked at the computer place, they got hit with it all the time, as long as 5 years ago. Reverends calling for 1000 sticks of memory or 500 hard drives to help the poor chilluns. My boss went as far as to do the charges on a card one time (this is before we knew it was a scam but suspected it..) and it cleared... luckily he had sense to wait a few days before he did anything else, and the credit card company alerted him that it was a fraudelent number, before he sent out any money to the scammers.
Another shipping scam to watch out for is on buying big ticket items. They could potentially use this with a used router, etc. so keep you eyes open.
My buddy wanted to buy a used John Deere tractor. He went online and from some classified ad found exactly what he wanted, and it had a really low price. It had a shipping/escrow company listed that was handling the sale, so he called them. They gave him a few details about the tractor, then wanted him to wire the money for the shipping, and he could pay the rest of the money for the tractor to the truck-driver when it showed up.
He wanted me to look at the tractor ad to tell him what I thought, and it all looked legit to me. But the 'wiring' money bit sounded fishy, so I looked it up and sure enough other people had been taken... I was glad we have these emails posted on here every now and then to keep me suspicious of any good deal...

Over the past few years I've felt really rejected because I had never received any orders from the good Reverend, but Saturday I finally got my first email. Now I feel like one of the family.

They get enough money to make it worthwhile to keep at it, obviously.
My wife had an elderly client who was taken in by a Nigerian money scam. So far they have cleaned him out for thousands, but he refuses to accept that he's being scammed. Apparently he's had long heartfelt phone conversations with the scammer (its one of those "help me get millions out of the country" operations) and is convinced he is legitimate, and that any day now it will all work out. They have very plausible-sounding scenarios in place to keep a fish on the hook until there is nothing left. Sad...
