I have a customer that is starting a Spray Crete division to his existing flooring company. IF you aren't familiar with this process, they spay some kind of decorative finish over new or existing concrete - pool decks, patios, sidewalks, garage floors etc. Anyway, he calls and asks me to make custom stencils for him. I'm not sure what type of material to use? The stencil will need to be heavy enough to stay in place while being sprayed, but not so heavy that they can't be handled easily. Some will be re-used, most will be a one time use so they need to be somewhat cost effective.
The company that he bought this franchise from stated to go to your "local sign shop" and they will know what you need. yeah right!!!!
Any experience or suggestions?

Denny, I order all my stencils from Stencilsonline.com. I have mostly ordered small stencils but they have all types of industrial stencils too. At the time of purchase, this company offers duplicate stencils at a lower price. I have gotten a great product at a resonable price and they have great service. Stencil Online Judy

Hiya Denny, I'm not familiar with "Spray Crete" but I do have a neighbor that does concrete finishing. Since I'm using his photo below, he works for Premier Garage of Central PA. From what he's learned so far, the type of "stencil" will depend on the size, finish or treatment used and the texture of the surface that is being treated or decorated. Cutting a decorative vinyl mask for a 20' x 50' driveway just isn't a good idea Besides good painters masking tape, the one tried and true material (so far) is intermediate vinyl...
As you can see, you can get pretty colorful by applying multiple layers of mask. The crest was created on polished concrete using vinyl and various stains. It's a p.i.t.a. though! The surface must be thoroughly clean, dry and reasonably warm in order to get the vinyl to stick. So, heat and a stiff brush will assist with the installation. Once the vinyl is down, you can continue with the decorative treatment. From what I understand, the same applies to the thicker spray-on coatings, but you just can't expect much detail in the design though.
Havin' fun,
Checkers
