I am making a 4'x8' Sign for a friend. It will be a Black Background; Omega Board. Here is the Question: Would you clear the Gold or not? The Sign will be 15' in the air, attached to the building. I know adding Clear will help to the Luster, but not clearing it will last much longer.

If it's real Gold, clearing won't help the luster. My experience is that clearing makes it look more like gold paint. Nothing is as good as genuine Gold in all its glory.

It is most important that you use only 23kt gold leaf. It is the only one that need no clear. Bill

Thanks for the input. My next Question is: Has anyone used the new mix of Slow Size from Le Franc. I heard the were forced to take out the Lead? Any truth to this?

So far, so good, it looks different in color, but after 12 hours it still works as well. We just have to hold our breath and wait several years to see if it holds up as well as the original. Will they ever leave well enough alone? Bill

Kevin........Gary Anderson had trouble with the new Lefrancs over acrylics. You may need a layer of Ti-Cote if you're gilding over water-based paints. As Bill said, I haven't heard of any problems other than that.

Art Essentials told me the first reformulation had some major problems before they formulated it again. He was pretty ticked at LeFranc for sending the initial product out to market with problems. He says the newer mix should be good but he dropped the LeFranc line after those issues.
I haven't had any experience with the new product but you might check on exactly when it was made. I don't know when it was changed to the current formulation. I used up my old supply of LeFranc and am trying some Rolco now.

I've heard Rolco is better than the reformulated LeFranc. I used some and it worked great. BUT, that was my first experience with ANY slow size. I have a pint of original LeFranc so I'll try it some day and see if I notice a difference.

Again, Thanks for the Input. 2 more Questions: Is Rolco, Waterbased or Oilbased. 2nd, has anyone tried to Route a piece of Mother Pearl...? Before I forget, Happy Mothers Day to All.

Thanks Dave. I think I will do a test panel. Does it tack up in the 12hr period?
