Actually the backstory isn't important and the exchange wasn't warranted, but we'll be doing the actual woodgraining today and taking pictures. I'll post a sporadic series on this thread but all of the in-depth stuff will be for Barb to post in the step-bystep.

I think it is STILL educational! It went from showing a technique that we can all use, to the importance of good spacing to forget what signs look like, let's make MONEY. These are all topics that are discussed at Letterhead Meets and they help us all in some way or another.
Keep on target with the step bt step Pierre, I'm sure it will be good. If you are on THIS board, ya gotta have a thick skin, know hockey, own alot of guns, have an opinion of politics, religon, strawberry pie, king or queen size beds, baby seals, be green freindly, have a love/hate relationship with MAC/PC, know how to keep your head down in a router war, who's birfday it is, and what color Donna will be painting her kitchen ensemble..(Donna, use a light chartrouse).
I like axe in the back annalogy myself....haha
It's a great day to alive and make signs isn't it?

I'll post more pics in the morning. The PB240 is cured now. The woodgraining process will be done today, priming later today, woodgrain panel painting and copy routing tomorrow. We'll post a few pics on wednesday, but without all of the explanation. That will be in Barb's step by step forum. We expect final assembly by thursday as the routed copy must be painted and cured before lamination. Patience.

The only three tools you'll need unless you're creating knotholes, then you'll need to add a veining chisel. Keep a vacumn nearby. Don't sweep the particles.... Vacumn them!
Hold the three tined veiner as shown. This allows you to regulate down pressure on the tool. Always begin level, apply pressure, ease down into the PB and ease up the pressure at the end of the stroke. If you need a few marker gide lines, do it. We usually don't.
Latigo also uses this method for control... gripping the tined veining tool at the front.
Usinging the mid-sized stone carving tool, use both hands. One to hold, one to apply pressure. Simple knotholes will come later. This tool makes the finer, more controllable lines.

Knot necessary, but............ Use your small veining chisel for form a knothole. Lat did a very simple one here.
Use a flat chisel to remove the PB240 overflow from one edge.
Pass all four edges through a saw to remove the excess PB240 or sand it off.
The woodgraining effect will become much stronger with the stain or paint process. If you want a stronger, rougher effect, keep passing your veining tines through the same veins you've already cut.
Use a brush to prime if it's to be painted. If it's to be stained, DO NOT PRIME the face, just the sides and back. If your shop has no air flow or evacuation system, do NOT use oil based paints or stains.
Ok, crew. More pics in a day or so when the paint process is done.

Cool Technique.. Faster then my Router for quick Down and Dirty Profitable Woodgraining.. I would have thought you would have been using the TSF 45 then applying the texture to that.

Nope. It took Lat all of 20 minutes to woodgrain that one and it could have been far more detailed and realisitc if the dollars were right, but the Architect has a dollar budget as we have a time budget. The explanation for shaping tools and technique will be in the step by step. This has been a very simplistic explanation thus far.

Thanks, guys. You too Si! Actually, an in-depth explanation will be a part of the step by step. Lots of tips on making it happen clean and fast. Tool shaping, etc. This morning it gets the final paint coat. Once that's cured, the patterns will be made and the copy will be applied. Later.............

I used a dremel tool on a recent job(3x6') with a few different sized bits and went in at varied angles and depths-I imagined it to be like the most choicest pieces of redwood that ever got my hands on. I simply skipped having to place and glue together.(I never liked that part anyway). It turned out pretty slick with most of the dust staying low to the face. You just vacuum the excess off every once in a while to see where you're at. I then sprayed the grain back in with an airbrush(a dual-action Paashe). I'll post it at design/cost workshop sometime. I think hand-carving is is an extreme lost art and respect the craft tremendously. I think it's cool to try one's hand in it even with modern methods and ingenuity that wields our creative savvy generously while still maintaining efficiency. Give them what they want and a little more if you can swing it. Maybe they will ask for you by name the next time. that's how I got that one.

With the primer cured and the top coat color selected and cured, (in this case, a light beige) we now apply the slightly darker grain color. The paint is mixed very thin so it flows into the grain and remains wet long enough to wipe the slightly darker color from the surface. (More detailed explanations on the finished step by step)
Pour........
Roll quickly and evenly........
Wipe quickly with wet rags....
Tomorrow we'll show the paint flooded into the grain as having cured darker than the topcoat.

Sorry this is taking a while. We're trying to fit it in between a few deadline projects. Thus far we have 1 hour and 45 minutes in actual time invested, and this includes router time for copy cutting. Most of you will be buying the copy from Gemini or a Letterhead associate.
Lay the pattern on the surface of the panel and tape in place. You're going to be using a marker to show hole drilling placement for screws from the back side of the panel.
Drill through the entire panel.
Flip the panel over and counter sink for the screw heads. We don't want screw heads protruding above the level of the wood.
Next, we'll be positioning and installing the copy....... just a bit later this morning.

Next, lay your pattern face up on the PB, carefully position each character in place, (use a bit of rubber cement in you have to)
Carefully, premask entire copy....... Two of you, count three and set it straight down, releasing simultaneously so as not to disturb copy position.
Gently (with your fingertips) push premask down on the surface of each character. Gently! Don't shift the characters.
Now squeegee the charcters tightly.
Flip the whole works face down on the PB
Use VHB or a "small" dot of PB240 on the back of each characcter.. less PB240 is better.... VHB is less messy and faster.
More later today......... Very busy here.

Remove the cover linere from the VHB, turn the whole thing right side up on the woodgrained suerface, push down on the copy to seat it, run the screws through the back into the sintra copy... The VHB or PB240 simply holds it in place while you run the screws. If you use PB240 leave it to cure overnight.
......and the final step will be clearcoating with the two part Glisten PC, or..... leave it as is.
Florescent lights, so the true color doesn't show here. There will be two more pictures in the series. This is a piece that anyone can do without having specialized equipment. After woodgraining you simply have to buy the precut dimensional lettering and install it as shown. No... big.... deal.... but probably big dollars. P

And thanks for staying with this thread and keeping it "on topic".

With the steel, this is actually a rather heavy one, so............. How are we going to safely hang it?
Its important that whatever hanging mechanism you use be centered in the carving. In this case we used full length angle steel.
