Hi Jill. Do you remember in 2004 I had asked about old Black & White pictures? I recall about a Dozen or so pictures being posted. Is there some way we could have a page set-up so we could continue to add them?

Joe Diaz should print some of these types of photos and show them what a really historic sign job looks like. Lettered from sidewalk to rooftop!

Those are terrific photos Rick. Hook Signs was a prolific sign and outdoor company over the years in the Edmonton Area. You'll have to search "signs" when you reach the following link. I can't post a direct link as this ubb does not allow () as operators in URLs
http://archivesphotos.edmonton.ca
Most of these pics are sample of their outdoor work, but they had some fine Gold Leaf Men and Signwriters. Note the descriptions and dates in the notes to the left of the images.
I sure don't miss those 30' extension ladders... gotta love bucket trucks!

Cool site Rick!

Did anybody notice the photos of four different sign shop fronts are all owned by "Wm Heyny Jr" ?
But the fonts used are all different.

How many of you old paint slingers can tell me the logo this fellow is painting... actually I think it's a "sketch" for a billboard or a wall job...

Duncan, the name Hook Signs really takes me back to my childhood in Calgary. A friend up the street and I used to climb and jump off everything in sight. Among our favorite subjects for vertical assault were the Hook Signs on Hwy. 1, just a few blocks away. After climbing and jumping off numerous roofs and signs, I finally managed to break my arm jumping off a 6' fence.

It was only after I got into the sign business that I learned not all billboards were Hook Signs.

The last time I visited Calgary, my friend was on the Calgary Police force. I think we both ended up well.

Here's a couple more. Hi Duncan, it’s funny you should mention Hook Signs. I remember when I first started at the tender age of sweet 16 I dropped in to the shop in Calgary to see about a job. I remember being fascinated by the skill and scale of the work being done. It must of left and huge impression on me because I'm still doing it 32 years later. PS. I didn't get the job at Hook.

In that first post I noticed that there's a sign nailed to the tree in front of the shop.

Am I to take it that's where the idea for "bandit" signs originated?
