Mark, if the banner is clean of paint, just use turps. Soak a cloth, and let it sit for a bit to "break" the surface. Then squeegee softened glue towards the centre. Depending on the glue (nasty cheap vinyls are the worst) may need two or three go's. When removed, SolPrep it. Let completely dry, get some dust or dirt on your hands, then rub them over the banner. This will let you see if you have missed any spots. Wash with sugar soap, then Ajax, or Bon Ami, warm water, then finally some Metho and you are right to go.

As Gregg says .. soak in turps. Use an old credit card as a scraper. Lots paper towels to clean up the gunk and dry it. Talcum powder will show where yer missed and helps stop the sticky residue. Then wipe down with Viponds Vinyl Prep.
Just changed the dates on 6 banners today ... same problem

Changing a date or time is simple. But the easiest way I've seen on a really large area is to lay the banner flat outside, spray Rapid Remover on it liberally, allow a few minutes and then spray the whole thing off with a water hose. You may have to repeat it again but it's still quicker, easier and less messy than scraping.

Mark, denatured alcohol is just methylated spirits. IPA, or Isopropyl alcohol is what's in the banner prep that Graphic Art Mart sells, or if it's not banner prep, it's something with a similar name- both evaporate fast.
Mineral turps softens the gunk, but getting the gunk off is yucky.
Some citrus cleaners work slightly, but you still have a mess to remove.
I wondered about importing some rapid remover a while back, but have been too preoccupied to follow it through.
I'd suggest trying the pink Septone hand cleaner, or suggesting the client get a new banner.
I talked a recent client here into a new one on the grounds that for me to remove the mess on what they supplied, plus to letter a new one, would be more expensive than just making a new one. I let them try & clean the gunk off after I'd made a start, and they quickly agreed to go for a totally new banner.

No Stephen, the comparison is way off beam- I can't believe I'm even typing this.
We reuse plastic shopping bags till they have no life left in them. We recycle whatever we can, even tin cans.
We also recycle secondhand banners, using them as tarpaulins to cover all sorts of things that need weatherproofing.
However, when it comes to my billable working time, and a client paying for it, efficiency, and minimising time wasted are high on my priority list.
If it turns out that to clean gunk off a banner will take over an hour, and still be not completed and clean, then in my opinion it is is better left alone and the clients' time spent on something of greater value, and lesser price.
I have been presented with banners that still looked awful after an hour of trying a multitude of solvents and tricks. Soap and water had no effect whatsoever, and it cost quite a bit more than a couple of dollars for the chemicals that were tried.
If we're only talking about the residue from a pair of numbers for a changed date, than that's different, but Mark's enquiry could be interpreted as something bigger than just a couple of digits- that's how I took it, but I may be wrong.
I was just trying to help, by naming him aussie equivalents to north american products- and what successes I have had with these equivalents- terminology down here IS different, and we have to learn to translate what we read into local alternatives.
I never suggested landfill. We reuse plastic bags. My spare time is valuable, as is money, and I have no wish to waste any of the aforementioned items.

I pulled of a couple of black letters they came off easy no glue said yeah can re use this banner then pulled of red letters and they were the problem so I sort of committed myself to taking the letters off the banner. Stephen every sign making teqhnique could be turned into a landfill debate lets leave it alone.

Labor verses new banner...? A new banner to begin with is the first option.

Stephen's suggestion reminds me of something that happened when I was a teenager. A friend, who was always working on cars, had a group over for a dance party. His father spread kitty litter all over the garage floor first and had all the dancing done there. By the time the party was over, all the grease and oil was gone.

Your idea reminded me of a similar method I used at Talladega Speedway. A giant "Rivet Brush"!

...You're kidding. Right?

Mark never said the size of the banner.. so if it was something about 3-4 foot by 30-40 foot 18 oz or 22 oz. pricing in at 475.00 dollars what is a 3-4 hour cleaning job. Price it into the labour (Shop) cost.
So I should tell my customers that I do not clean Vinyl Snot off their vehicles and they are better off buying a new one?
Shizt most 4' by 8 banners I can pull apart and have clean in less then 30 to 45 minutes.
As long as the banner has its strength for rope or screw downs.
Scooter had a very good article on how to repaint one if needed.
We refurbish Metals,MDO,Sintra,Plastics, etc. and charge to the shop rates.
What is wrong with this attempt with good material banners?

Or,,,,washing machine, filled with quart of Rapid tack remover and the banner. Maybe add in a few very used underwears for scrubbing power.

Mark, I was actually using it as a giant "Rivet Brush". I was testing 1" 3M masking tape on the painted asphalt surface to see how straight an edge could be painted without working on you hands and knees. Instead of brushing the letter (using a Pad Painter) we used a roller. It worked!
