I just finally got my first set of what will end up being many Mack brushes.. Now I just gotta figure out what next. Not to mention, that Alan Johnson book too.(i've had it a while)
Any suggestions on what next? Im in DC right now and dont have access to my supplies in Savannah, but I do have a can of 1shot that I can get busy with. Are their any supplies that I can pick up at Home Depot?
Thanx...

Well, you could get some thinner, 3 oz. cups, popsicle sticks, rags, and mineral oil. I use mineral oil to store my brushes in.
Is there a "Michaels" art store near-by? They would have some more "artists supplies" you may want to try. I take it this is your first go? Were you at Suwanee? When did the Packers change their colors to Red and Black? (Must be getting ready for Favre (pronounced FAV-REE) to retire huh?)
Find something to practice on...a smoothe surface, glass is about the best, then you can scrape it off right away...or parked cars. (I usually ask the owners first, but just for fun, stripe um up anyway, and see who has a sense of humor!
Seriously Larry, if you are near Melbourne Florida in a coupla weeks, Pat Neve will have a kick butt Meet, and you will get a chance to paint on many things and talk and jam with many other painters!!!
Welcome aboard!!

Thanks for the learned wisdom... Yes, I was at The Dixie meet in Suwanee... You striped and signed my toolbox...
as for the hat... naaa, its an Univsesity of Georgia Bulldog cap. they use the same "G"
"The oval "G" logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager George "Dad" Braisher. The team actually used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the "G" is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet.[17] Although the Packers have granted limited permission to other organizations to utilize a similar logo, notably the University of Georgia and Grambling State University, the Packers hold the trademark for it.[18] Adopted in 1964, the Georgia "G"- though different in design and color- was similar to the Packer's "G". Then Georgia head coach Vince Dooley thought it best to clear the use of Georgia's new emblem with the Packers. However, since its inception in 1961, the Packer's "G" has been redesigned several times and now looks like Georgia's original 1964 "G."[19]" -Wikipedia

Larry, with what you've got and what Mike suggested, you should be pretty well set. All you need now is practice, practice, practice.
The book you've got, John Hannukaine's, and Tramp's are all excellent to learn from. Use the information like a sponge; soak it up. Copy designs from the books. Really look at each design and follow how it transitions into the next. See your designs coming together, and becoming symmetrical. Get to know those brushes, how they feel, what difference they make in the line when you turn or twist them. Get to know when the paint is too thick or too thin by the way it pulls. Little things.
If you've got an acquaintance, or even know of someone who stripes, ask to watch. Go to car shows. Ask questions. Above all....practice.

Hey Larry, I think we met a Suwanee too. I was probably the youngest guy there (not that that is much of a description). To add to Mike's suggestions I would say if your just starting out glass is good but can be a lot harder. I used a lot of masonite board. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes. It got a super smooth surface on one side and a textured side on the other. To keep it cheap in the beginning and even still now sometimes I would primer the smooth surface a few times sanding with some 220 paper in between coats. Then do your background (or base) color with Krylon or Rustoleum. There are a number of cool effects and colors to choose from. Glass is nice but it's also nice to see your old pieces to to how your progressing.
Micheals or Hobbly Lobby won't carry it but look for a FINE ART supply store in your area and chances are they carry 1Shot or can get it easily (if you want more colors). Also when keeping it cheap in the beginning that you can mix any color from the primaries, red /blue/yellow and also black/white for tones and values.
Go to Borders or any book store and look for Advanced Pinstriping Art, Pinstriping Masters and Pinstriping Masters 2. Other than that there are a few other good websites to learn and share art like sketchkult.com, pinheadlounge.com and of course this site. You can also check out viseos on youtube.com if you have access to the internet.
Welcome to pinstriping, and by the way I think I'm obligated to dislike you cause' my brother is about to graduate as a Yellow Jacket, but you seem like a cool guy so I'll be nice... hahaha!

You might want to learn how to keep them clean because the way things are going you might not be able to buy them much longer. Bill

Bill's right, and also don't microwave food, and get only tofu, and line all your furniture up on a horizontal plain with the 2nd lunar eclipse.
"the way things are going" They said the same thing when tractors took over the horse.
Larry, depite the doom and gloom here, there will ALWAYS be lettering brushes to buy, use, clean, whatever.
calm down folks.
