Our shop charges $75.00 per hour as a shop rate but in all honesty I think it should be higher and we should adhere to it more than we tend to do. I do very little in the way of pricing and quotes, mainly looking after the production side of things, but I do see areas where we need to be charging more.

We have two rates. One for our corporate accounts and one for standard customers. Our corporate accounts do business with us every week and therefor get a discount. Our normal shop rate for standard customers is $69.50 hour. What's yours?

Is that an employee rate? Meaning, the rate per employee per hour that you bill their time out at? All creative time is billed out at $125/hr (per employee).

I have never went by a shop rate. I bid everything by peice work. I do however keep track of how many hours go into each job. With that being said my average per hour bottoms out at $200.00 per hour and averages out at $300.00 per hour. On any sand blasted, gilding or hand carving the average is more like $500.00 per hour and up. Logo design is where things get a little fuzzy, I usually only average $100.00 per hour. But it is very fun and great excersize in discovery and learning.

I say my rate is $60 per hour, however I usually make more. I just did 2 trucks, 4-colors of vinly - $700 for 2 1/2 HRS. If I'm painting a wall or something, I always make better money. (Experiance does help) If I "Bid" a days labor its $500. I always use the price guide and make good money. I also turn down most jobs that are just not fun or creative. Never tell the customer your hourly rate!

Our hourly rate is $88. I base my pricing on how many hours it would take me to do a job @ $88 per hour. An employee may take twice as long to do the same job so rather than having a different rate for different people, I just base it on how much time I would spend doing the job. I haven't raised my prices in about a year.

Rate is relative to overhead, at least in my experience. Vicious circle, though...
Scenario A:Work out of the house, virtually no overhead since I have everything "paid for" already. Nice rate. Can't fit all of the trucks in my garage doors...garage is 1400 sq feet, door is 7x9. No vans with ladder racks, no semis...hmmm rent space? hmmmm Town comes by and says...no home business allowed. Must now rent space to stay in business.
Scenario B: Review options to rent.Best deal around here...Rent a 2500 sq ft 25 year old shop with forced air heat to blow dirt into all paint and vinyl work. Cracked concrete, no office or showroom, must pay owners property taxes, utilities and snow plowing/grass cutting. For $2200.00/mo Hmmm...NO!
Scenario C: Build new 5400 shop on recently purchased property with lowest taxes in area. Fits anything. In-floor heat...virtually no dust. Pay mortgage equal to rent in old crappy shop as listed above. Overhead comes into play here. Curse every month that I have to pay a mortgage now, but happy to have enough work to do whatever I want to do, it all fits.
Scenario D: Dream of not having a mortgage...in 22.5 years!
The Sign Craft Pricing Guide is a great reference!

If you are curious what may be your real hourly rate and want to go through the exercise of crunching a few personal numbers, you can download "Profit Watch" from www.estimatesoftware.com and figure it out exactly. It's free. The objectives and setups of our shops are all a bit different from each other, and you may find it interesting to see what you come up with !
