Can you indicate what would be the best determining trait that describes a professional?
In two words....!

Don't know about two words, but here's a quote I saved on the topic... "A professional is defined not by the business a person is in,but by the way that person conducts his or her business."

technically, the sentence hasn't been finished, since professional is an adjective- so the question is: are me meant to presume you mean 'a professional person/tradesman, i.e. the opposite of an amateur person'
It's one of those words like 'graphic' which to me is also an adjective, like a graphic event, a graphic description etc, but everytime I hear someone say they want a graphic, I keep waiting to hear what it's a graphic of that they're after...!
Words ending in the suffix 'ic' or 'al', are to me, not nouns.
Enough of this sermon...in answer to the presumed question- many of the above are good, but I'll add:
error avoidance

I was apprenticing in a shop in Southern California that also employed this old guy who was a binge drinker between signs. Johnny told old Albert to go paint that panel with acumen. Following much searching and rattling of cans on the paint shelves, Albert announced that he couldn't find the acumen!
Sorry for sidetracking your post CJ, but Nancie distracted me.

Originally I understood it to be someone who had "University Degree" in a certain field of study. Such as Physician, Lawyer, Accountant, etc. It is sometimes used to differentiate any person that makes a living at something as opposed to an amateur that works at it for extra income or without pay. In either case a professional is not always an expert or even proficient, they just make a living at it. I think journeyman is a better classification for a trades person and it never gets confused with a University Graduate. In the past Signwriters were referred to as Mechanics. Now that really didn't make sense. Let's face it the English language is probably the most confusing commonly used language anywhere and the regional differences can be vast,eh?
but seriously, your question also said 'best trait' which sugests you're looking for a trait of human nature, or human qualities...
I'll have to rethink that.
edited to add: competence & attitude, are my suggestions so far...

Sometimes a person hears someone talking but they are not really "LISTENING"... Other times you think you know something but don't really "QUESTION" it...

Clear communication is very important. As Ian said the english language has so many different nuances. The written word should probably be even better crafted as it is missing tone and inflection, and may be misinterpreted.(oops,36 words.)
