I guess awhile back I was suffering from parental paranoia, I have a 15 year old who is heavily into graffiti and hip hop. He got into trouble for painting the wall behind the school, but instead of beating up on him, we've encouraged it, in a more controlled enviroment. He spends hours on end with a large roll of paper turning out some great stuff, we also fix boards in the barn that they can paint.
According to him the crap on the backdoor is tagging, which him and his friends are dead against. There are some pretty good signpeople today that were former grafitti artists.
I would hate if somebody painted the side of our building or vehicles, but don't see anything wrong with encouraging it elsewhere.

Some of the tagging I see around here in Nova Scotia is out of this world.... Great Minds!
I am going on a 20 KM walk today with camera in hand. Wait! Lets see what I find. I will post them Because this work is a free spirit... with no money attached.

Driving down the Presidio for several blocks at the cross streets there are these parked moving vans assumably advertisements. This is one of them.
There is a documentary I once watched on tagging and found much of it brilliant work. Granted, it did destroy the property of someone else and devalue the neighborhood in much the same way that would happen if the punks and gothics decided to make your store front their hangout.
When I look at this truck I see planning and much careful consideration going into the design. As far as craftsmanship, well that's another story.
But what does it say?

I have a skate board facility right next door with the same graffiti layout on their sign. When it stops with the freezing rain, I'll venture out and take a pic. Then we'll see if anyone can read the name of the place.
ps. I love watching the train cars go by. I just marvel at the artisty.

Well, at least they are hand lettering this stuff. More than can be said for the majority of sign "painters".

Well, if a group of professional lettering artists can't read the sign, what hope is there for the general public
Hopefully those in their intended niche market can make it out.
I've seen some documentaries on graffiti and they split my emotions. I find it brilliant on one hand and destructive on the other. Most of it is just plain ugly. I'm also 62, if I were 15 I'd probably have a ton of spray cans hidden somewhere

Rick, What I can decipher is SATUR. There are two signatures on the piece, one is "Joey" and up in the right-hand red area it also appears to say "satur" in white. Often there will be clues within or around the piece.
Edit to say that Ray is correct. I was typing and taking care of customers, by the time I got back, Ray had a better shot. It's also signed in the bottom shadow.

Thanks Ray, there is some great work on his site!
I was way off but at least I can recognize the effort and skill that goes into creating this type of art, and I can see the message will reach it's intended market without any problems, whether or not other people "get it."
I also saw a documentary highlighting a few of the top artists and while some folks here speak of the damage to property, I saw an entirely different side in the film. These guys were commissioned big bucks to come in and work their magic on large walls, by individuals, businesses, organizations and municipalities that wanted artwork that fits the urban setting but still has meaningful content. They also carried permits to show anyone that gave them any trouble.
For a group of folks that's also into artwork by guys like Ed Roth or Coop', ya'll seem a little stuffy.

Not too much different then some of the wraps I've seen on box trucks...beautiful artwork, but you can't find the name of the company doing the advertising.

I'm guessing the owners of the truck wanted this - it was done from a ladder and more than a few hours of work.
I view this style of graffiti art as pretty much a continuation of the aesthetics of pinstriping.
Most of the arabesques in striping don't "say" or "mean" anything, but sometimes you look at a white and then discover a name or an animal or something. (Tramp Warner's layouts come to mind.)
This tag is just a lot more complex than most. I admire the shading in the letterforms and the bust-out (the curls on the outside edge.) It takes a lot of can practice to do that.
As for legibility, well... its an icon, or a signature, not really a typical sign. the intended "audience" for this image can read it (or recognize) it just fine. it is intended for a small group of people in-the-know.

Here is my only attempt at Graffiti...I did this for some students at the University where I used to work. The HDU grey letters are about 12 inches tall....I used my beat up old Badger airbrush for this.
This piece was to be used in a video the students were producing. One of many of the crazy projects that came my way in 6 years of that job.
It has it's place and audience...But poorly done work can be an eye sore.
