One rectangular 4'x8' sign, Dibond or similar product. Unfortunately all the customer has is a 1500 pixel wide jpeg. I realize that a lot of people find this stuff very cool, but I personally do not want to produce it. I don't need to make anything on this, just provide the people with another option, since they are not sure where else to go. I haven't quoted a price yet, but assume it will be a factor. Shipping costs may also be a factor, so the closer the better. Don't know the people, so I can't tell whether they will be good customers or not. Maybe they'll get a heart attack when they hear what it will cost them? It's one thing to get a fancy logo made, but quite another to get it produced, especially with no vector file! E-mail me with a quote, including estimated shipping to postal code S0A 2Z0, if you're interested.
Here is the digital image you supplied at 500 pixels wide, resized & resampled to represent the resolution at approx 4'x8' in size. It was resized in Photoshop to fit a 4'x8' with your very small 500 pixel wide image you posted.
I agree 1500 pixels is very small too, but could work for viewing for a 15'+ distance.
The 3'x7.5' UV coated digital print alone would run about $252.00. Plus a $65.00 setup charge plus shipping.
As long as the client understands the "distance" thing. Digital could be an option.
Just apply the print on a black bkgd alumacore panel.
Hope this helped....Good Luck!

I'm just wondering, a 4x8 of this, hand painted going out of our shop wouldn't be under $1200.00...How then is it possible to do this digitally at the above prices when there is high end digial printers, Inks, Software, involved??? This is perplexing to me as this equipment is not cheap. Just wondering...

That kind of equipment has to be kept busy busy busy and constantly makes money. I think of it like a farmer going back and forth forever across a field. It adds up.

32 SQ FT at $10/SQ FT for the digital print (around the going price these days) for the image as is...no clean up. Like Michael mentions, it'll probably be okay for viewing from a distance as most people don't make it a habit to get close enough to smell signs anyway.
I'd be around the $1200 mark as well, plus shipping. Black Dibond, quick vectors so I can plot for a pounce pattern, all paint with airbrushed version of the skull. (Bike shops like airbrush stuff... )

Thanks guys! I have talked with some people and will contact a few more and then pass on the information, after that it's up to that customer to make contact. Peewee, I looked at your website but none of the links on the homepage would open up. Could it be just my computer? Worth checking though.
I think this one would be OK for you to print as-is.
I resized the 500pixel wide image you posted up to 4'x8' at 100 pixels per inch and after a little Unsharp Mask in Photoshop, it's totally acceptable to use for a sign to be viewed from a little distance. It definitely could be a little smoother but at 10-15 feet nobody's going to see the difference.
You have 3 (err.. 9) times the resolution than the posted image so I think you'd be safe in printing it as-is.
Worst case scenario, you print up a 6"x6" patch from the file at full size so you can see exactly what it's going to look like, and have the customer approve it before printing the whole thing.

I would reset the type and cut it out of vinyl, then project the skull and flames onto the diabond, hand paint it, with a little airbrush work then apply the cut vinyl graphics, total price on diabond would be just about $1,000 but then the same issue is shipping a 4 x 8. you dont have any airbrush guys near you that you could sub out the artwork part to?

Jeff is in line with the $10.00 sq ft for digitally printed laminated graphics, from my perspective; 32 sq ft x $10.00 = $320.00 plus shipping PLUS THE PANEL, which it seems might have been read over too quickly...he would supply the decals for that price, not decals & panel. If that was (is???) the case, I'd sell my Mimaki and shop and have Jeff output all my work! The bad news is that some clients have a web designer lay out their logos now. I just had a case of this. Try putting a 640 x 480 image on the side of a bus...doesn't work well and the re-draw (in Illustrator) didn't have all the detail of the original imagery that it was produced from. (The original photo couldn't be located by the "designer" to be more accurate with the re-draw.) So we output it after doing exactly as referenced above. Did a sample, discussed the distance factor, got approval and produced the job.

I'm sure none of you know this, but there are wholesale to the trade printers that sell digital printing for .99 cents a sq ft now. A friend of mine ordered 2-3'x10' prints that turned out great. Shipped same day. Paint allways looks better but with nothing to compare it to people love it.

Ken, check out my post about sign shops to population ratio Dec 5 07. You'll see why .99 cent prints are important. I agree that hand done art is better (fine art major here), but if you have a demographic like mine, if you want to keep doing signs and not loose your house, you have to satisfy the consumer. Agreed a dimensional sign with hand carving and gilding is probably what would be great for the customer's image, but the $$$ vs a digital print "that will do the job for around a $100 bucks" will always win. Demographic here: population about 150,000 with surrounding communities, 53 LISTED sign shops in the book, plus more garage shops, CONSERVATIVE, cold northern location equals lots of tire kicking.
