This one takes contributions, for those who want some self-promo: bitmaps and SVG vector. If Wikimedia gains the prestige of Wikipedia, that could be pretty neat. I can't guess how they'll organize and store so much, but we'll see.

It requires Flash mainly because of the interactive World map navigation and incredibly fast access to large databases of photos (looks like it integrates with PHP code to access).
Welcome to 21st century-- Flash is here to stay! it is the most versatile form of web development that allows seamless media integration that would be almost impossible with older technology.

Thanks, Michael. I'll have to see how much memory it takes up. There's so much add-on stuff out there that I can't sift much of it.

Bruce-- Sorry, I hope that didn't come off as a snippy remark, i didn't mean it that way. I have that conversation with clients almost daily, and that is my standard answer to them. We are able to do alot of extraordinary things by using Flash technology, and haven't even scratched the surface. We built a similar interface using just a U.S. map, so that's how I recognized the way they used Flash in the globe navagation.
I'm not sure of the requirements for the latest Flash player download, but I don't think it is very intrusive. Once it is loaded, you shouldn't see anymore prompts from flash embedded sites, they will just simply play like they are supposed to.
Ther are some pretty neat pics on both sites -- I need to block off some time and just browse.

Wasn't snappy. Turns out Flash has been around for a while, and I even have it on a CD. Now I can try to find out what it is. I've learned to be leery about grabbing add-ons just because they're there. Do I have room for it? Will it screw up something else in my machine? For instance, when I upgraded Internet Explorer, my scanner stopped working. Who'd have guessed? It took a damned long time to untie that bird's nest, and who needs it? I try to go slow and ask people who've been-there-done-that for advice. For which Thanks much.

Sonny I like the pictures too! I signed up on the site.
I am going to enter some digital photos and see if I win anything.
Michael Sorry man but 'Flash' is a thing of the past! I do digital display work and I would never use it, as the script is clumsy and has way to many loop holes to work with.
'Adobe Premiere' or 'MacroMedia Director' MX gives you better stablity than Flash anyday.

Yes, Premiere and Director are both excellent programs to use if you are building movies, editing video clips, or making shockwave movies. They do some of the same things that Flash can do, but for web use, they are not designed to handle rich internet content as well as Flash, or in building entire interactive multimedia websites. It's like comparing apples and oranges. If I wanted to build a kiosk movie, I would use Director-- If I wanted to build an interactive website, I would use Flash. Two different tools for two different types of jobs.
To claim that Flash is a thing of the past is almost laughable-- and far from obsolete -- be sure to tell that to BMW, Nike, Disney and the countless movie companies that build and use cutting edge interactive flash websites.
BTW-- you would still have to download a "shockwave" player, instead of a "flash" player, which is what they didn't want to have to do in the first place.
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the post -- I am looking for the link to a similar photo site that I ran across about a year ago-- I think it was also a contibutable site.
