I've been engraving now in combination with other sign shop duties for about 6 months. The tensioning belt within the tracking mechanism snapped. I have repaired the belt just fine as it is extremely low tension. I just have no clue how it goes back onto the unit. I have searched for a schematic, but can find nothing online or in my user manual. I have looked at the opened unit and it just appears not to have a home!!! This just happened at about 4:55pm, so my call to Roland in Irvine went unanswered. If anyone has a clue about this please respond aaasap!!! I bought a bit of time from the customer today, but feel one more day would blemish my credibility.

StupidQuestions.com Answering my own question and perhaps enlightening anyone who may be surfing by:
My Roland EGX-30 has a rubber strip that runs along the top and bottom perimiter of the tracking mechanism to keep foreign material out. (It looked like a turntable belt from a phonograph.) I naturally assumed this was a tensioning belt that had snapped, though it had just come loose on one side and had to be re-glued. Though this did involve minor surgery. All is good and engraver running fine. Technology, it was so much simpler with a quill and mahl stick, but I had a helluvah time with those 1/8" letters!
