Here in Southern California, my paint store (Frazee)tells me that they are discontinuing oil base paint next year. The other 3 paint suppliers (Vista, Dunn-Edwards, Etc.)already quit selling all oil base paints. Now what do we do?

The end times are coming sooner than we think. But what about vinyl? It's also a petroleum product.

It's true: there are better latex paints today than only a few years ago. Lots of folks have said so on this BB, and I've found them to be right.
Alicia has a point about vinyl. Its manufacture is probably not environmentally-friendly. And when we use it on a job, together with the backing paper and transfer tape, we end up with 3 times more trash than product. So how long can that go on?

I will believe that this paint bulls**t is, in fact, a sincere effort by politicians to improve the environment when they make it a law that all cars, trucks, planes, construction vehicles etc. be painted with water based paints. Slap down small individualized industries, workers like sign painters, house painters, but leave the powerful organized major corporate (contributors) entities alone???

if you can only imagine...if vinyl graphics were outlawed...80% of this industry would be out of work because they cannot hand letter...hmmm
seriously...we have move to all laytex. it lasts longer, does not oxidize, easy cleanup, and expands and contracts in the tuffest climates. oil based paint gets harder the older it gets and that is why it cracks and fails....this comes from a hard core oil based guy!

If they banned vinyl, I'd have to have more than 24 hours in a day to keep up with all the work that would come through my door from hand lettering.

Sounds like political correctness to me, along with the ethanol deal (corn for fuel??). Many years ago when the vinyl craze was occurring I would think: "what if all the computers in the world crashed?" Sometimes I do think I would have been better off in the 70's or further back (the dark ages maybe) then paint and brush would be all the rage again.

I suspect that the liquid parts of the paint are what classify it differently than vinyl. I don't know about the resins, but the solvents seem to be an issue. As far as the oil based products, I think they'll still be available from industrial suppliers and not the stores that sell to homeowners.

Wonderfull! I'd like to thank all involved in making that decision for me! Thank You!
Thank all you "anti oil in paint people" for protecting me AND MY FAMILY from the oil that comes in paint. It is horendious!! It would surely have killed me or severely disabled my children who absolutely LOVE the taste of oil based paints. Ha Ha Who doesn't?
And God forbid... Protect the potential people maimed merely in my presence while using or ingesting such a vile substance.
How did I sleep at nite???
Thank you & PLEEEESE continue to restrict me.
