I was wondering if someone would be willing to sell me some smaller pieces of HDU 12" wide and up by different lengths I'm looking to make some samples. Pink and Blue foam just isn't that impressive to sign shops...
Thanks, John

John, SignFoam used to have a sample kit you could send for that had 9" or so squares of different weights of HDU. I think Precision Board had a similar kit (Coastal Enterprises) Check out their websites to see if these are still offered.
I used to get a lot of 12" squares at sign trade shows. My one local supplier has one every fall. But lately their samples haven't been so enticing. You could also ask your local supplier if they have any "scratch and dent" HDU lying about at a discount.
I think, for the money ($125? It's been awhile for me, and I get something called Jasperboard thru N. Glantz) I would buy a 4x8 sheet of 15# and make up some of my own sample pieces. It is, after all, an investment in your business and well worth it.
I personally could never see the sense of making a sign from regular pink or blue foam, no matter how it is encapsulated. It just seems "cheap" to me, and if I were a customer I would be skeptical of it. I would also wonder about the longevity of the finished product.
Love....Jill

...Look in the dumpster of any local sign co. that makes alot of foam signs. You will probably find more than enough cast offs for many small projects.

That is a great idea, most sign shops would have lots of small HDU scrap that is too expensive to just toss.
We give all our scraps to the local high school tech teacher. He has a cnc router, milling machine and lathe but can't afford to buy HDU for the projects.

Thanks for the advice Jill, I'll look into the Jasper board. Looks like there is a Glantz here in Phoenix. I agree the insulation foam is good for a trial run before putting the bits to the expensive stuff. But I wouldn't want to pass it off as quality material. I also took you up on the Mike Stevens book suggestion, now If I could figure out where one of my rug rats put it.
Thanks, John
