I just phoned a customer to let him know his sign is done, and it turns out he gave me the wrong spelling. The good news is, not my mistake and he will cover additional time/cost. BUT now I have to fix it: it is a flat gild on 1-shot, on a redwood panel. Do I strip it? Sand it? Just paint over? I have no idea. Please help! Thanks!

Hiya Erica, I'm no expert, but I would sand it, repaint and regild. However, I'd wait until someone else with more experience to reply, because I don't make mistakes like this

Duct tape. Place it over the letters you want to remove. Press it down, yank up quickly and firmly. The gold and any clear will come right off. Mineral spirits will remove the size.

It's off! Thanks Checkers and George. Checkers, my first instinct was to sand, paint and regild too; and as for mistakes, well, I'm just glad it wasn't mine so I don't have to walk around calling myself 'stoopid' all day. George, the duct tape didn't remove much (however I have no clear on the gold, maybe this is the reason) anyway it seemed to remove enough that the mineral spirits were able to get at the size. With a lot of rubbing, it's off. Cool tip! I will lay on another coat of 1-shot to freshen it up and gild again. Thanks again guys!

Erica, for future reference here's a trick I used once before. I laid a cloth over the area I wanted to move and pour isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits over it and waited 10-15 minutes. this works well if your background isn't too fresh or better still, has been sprayed with a catalyst in the paint.
it worked for me!!
